Tough topic, but two brilliant songwriters rose to the challenge:
Neil Young and
John Prine. Herewith:

* The Greeks had 3 words for love--
agape,
eros and
philia.
Eros is easy;
philia is generalized love of mankind, learning, creating. Then comes
agape: The soul-deep, I'd -do-anything-for-you love you have for a long-term friend--the relationship has been tested and held strong. That's what Mr. Young was talking about.
A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson

How about The Beatles' Cold Turkey ?
I remember being about 12 hearing that when it was new , not knowing WTF they were
singing about, really. I never did heroin , but I have done a thing or two and gone to rehab
(1988 ) . Mrs. Moose too , but we met after we were both clean .

Cold Turkey was a Lennon solo single
how about Beatles "everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey"
and George Michael's "monkey"
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..." - Me 2014.

Matt Skiba - Good ******* Bye
A ton of his songs deal with heroin in subtle ways. I'd post a youtube link but I'm on mobile and a lazy jerkoff.

What about a song by people who really knew what it was about
Velvet Underground - Heroin

Even the music/sound is about heroin

How about? I tend to forget how powerful Mr. Lennon's song is, never more so than here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8GOIsmzVkI << pure agonizing
And the Cypriot?

That Beatles song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNeSJVUxOkc << interesting disc--here's another:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ODh9R6YQqs << OK, so they don't all translate all that well...
I consider this a disguised, allusive heroin song--not a shred of proof and I don't know if Mr. John or Mr. Taupin had a jones--this proves the genius of Mr. Taupin's poetic but plain-spoken lyricism. "Ambiguous" at its best.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7XnlhIDz1U and with George Michael: [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljyt9_TFZd4"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljyt9_TFZd4
What the above prove beyond doubt is, how hard it is to write a REALISTIC song about heroin--my original thesis.

From listening to that song a couple of times, and from the comments, I'd say it was about trying to leave alcohol behind, not heroin. I could be wrong...
Because this is basically a PG Board and because of the title, I won't link but it is worth your time to do so.
