I'd have to believe a youngster was really committed before I'd invest > $500. The world doesn't expect another Art Blakey but good skin-bangers/time-keepers are always in demand. Good luck/good motivation/good skill to you both.

Have a look at any YT video featuring Simon Phillips. One of the best drummers out there and a master of getting the right tone out of a kit. He has spent years experimenting with different setups and I believe he has the ultimate sound. He endorses Tama kits so they can't be bad although his is custom made.
