Yma Sumac - Who else breaks the mold like she did? (Right subforum for this?)
#1
Hello! I'm new here.

I am a music enthusiast with roots in all the stereotypical "indie-rock" genres. These days I've been branching out to musical aesthetics my teenage self never thought I'd enjoy. I love experiemental and weird, but expressed with purpose, beauty and some coherence. I loathe to admit I am clueless about 75% of genres out there, especially music from other corners of the globe.

So far I've enjoyed artists like Yma Sumac (Operatic, experimental, damned impressive), Rodrigo y Gabriela, Tinariwen (Not much risk-taking with these two, but GREAT aesthetics) and I want to hear more.

Based on those three artists, what suggestions might you guys have for me?

Yma was noted for her vocal range, so if you like that aspect you could try Shawn Phillips - start with Second Contribution
In terms of guitar aesthetics try Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 string guitar or Sir Richard Bishop - Freaks of Araby

Nice picks people! I will have to familiarise myself with Yma Sumac? I enjoy Emma Shapplin for modern operatic vocals.
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!
