2. Band Aid, âDo They Know Itâs Christmas?' ***
single written for a famine appeal by Bob Geldof and Ultravox frontman Midge Ure(he's the forgotten one here!).
little did they know the song would bring about the whole Live Aid thing in all conrers of the globe.
single contained a who's who of british rock both past and present, it also helped alienate Margaret Thatcher from the general public and her popularity slide when it was revealed that her government would still be cvollecting the relevant taxes for the sale of this charity record, she later did an about turn and didnt take the revenue for it!
single was re-recorded by Band Aid II a few years later, that version also topped the charts.
this single still makes it into the UK charts on an annual basis around xmastime.
Year: 1984
Sold: 3.69m
Chart High: #1

1. Elton John â âSomething About The Way You Look Tonightâ/âCandle In The Wind 97â. ***
the actual official "a" side is brilliant IMO..its a lovely ballad by Reggie.
the official "b" side is a reworking of the old "candle in the wind" for Diana who had recently passed.
lets face it, the single only sold as well as it did because of the outpouring of grief worldwide for Diana-Princess of Wales.
i hate that version of the Norma Jean song...
single sold some 30million copies worldwide and stayed in the Canadian charts for some 200+ weeks.
like i said, love the official "a" side, hate that Diana thing!
Year: 1997
Sold: 4.90m
Chart High: #1

and being a 'double-"a" sided hit' i will post the video for the abysmal "candle in the wind '97" below
noe diana was one of elton's best friends, and as much as i dislike this song, its still emotional to watch the performance at Daina's funeral...
just the way he stays totally proffessional and composed while obviously in mourning....great proffessional effort Sir reggie dwight, shame about the song being so crap though!

surprised that Bohemian Rhapsody sold so much! It is really not what you would call a mainstream pop song like most of the others! Nice to see it at #3!

^ Why? Did Alanis sell millions of copies of one of her singles in the UK ?
