A five-person a cappella group based out of Arlington, Texas, Pentatonix are best known for winning the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off in
2011. Formed by high-school friends Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying, the group got its initial start after its version of
Beyoncé and Lady Gaga's "Telephone," recorded for a local Glee-related contest, started garnering attention on YouTube. The band then added
members Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola, renamed itself Pentatonix, and auditioned for The Sing-Off. Standing out for their unexpected stylistic
range, which found them covering songs in such styles as electronica, reggae, R&B, dubstep, and more, Pentatonix ultimately won The Sing-Off
performing Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger." They released a debut EP, PTX, Vol. 1, in 2012.

âPeople are looking for a more organic, pure sound now that you donât get to hear so much on the radio. Itâs overpopulated with overproduced
tracks,â Pentatonix band mate and beat-boxer Kevin Olusola shared recently of the resurgence of a capella music. Delivering succinctly-
constructed vocal-pop hooks are the groupâs forteâbolstered by their tightly-packed, punching harmonies, draped over a wholesome rhythmic
section (courtesy of Avi Kaplan and Olusola, too). Itâs no real wonder how The Sing-Off season three champions have carved out their own market
nicheâthey are unapologetically bold, dynamically captivating and unlike anything else on the pop landscape.
With their PTX: Vol. III, Pentatonix have transformed into something completely cataclysmic and are poised for superstardom. While, sure, they
are already household names (in every sense of the term), what the new disc supplies (their own original âOn My Way Homeâ the highest, most
sparkling skyscraper moment) is a new-found sense of poise and confidence. Also on such covers as Stromaeâs âPapaoutaiâ (an undertaking which
required French tutors to get it just right) and âLa La Latchâ (a Sam Smith-hybrid of Disclosureâs âLatchâ and Naughty Boyâs âLa La Laâ),
theyâve notched up their expertly-laid arrangements and allowed themselves to open up in a truly inviting way.
Of course, adding a dash of Ariana Grande (their âProblemâ rendition is another standout moment) and Clean Banditâs âRather Beâ gives the
project even more accessibility, without coming across as unnecessary or forced. Despite being a lean seven tracks (with no sign of a full-
length LP in the near future), Pentatonix demonstrate their vast collection of influences, styles and breadth of their perspective. If a hit
single isnât achieved here, that might be the biggest travesty of 2014. Their previous two non-holiday EPs were simply setting the stage for
what is clearly their best release to-date.
one of the originals and the best thing for me:
