When Is Music Considered " Old" ?
#1
I, like many MD members, try to keep up with contemporary music or music of the day, modern music. When is music considered old? Is music new because it has just been released and is the flavour of the day and subsequently is it considered old once the single or album fades off the charts? With the hundreds of albums and singles released monthly it is impossible to keep abreast of new music. In the term new music I don't mean a new sound or God forbid a new genre! I am just talking about the release date and the age of the music so to speak.

A popular example for discussion sake, is Adele's last album Adele 21 released almost four years ago! Is this album considered old as well as the 5 singles it spurned? Just curious because when I mention an album from two or three years ago some people have said " Oh that's old".

What say ye?

When I was young, a 5 or 6-year-old album, like Thank Christ for the Bomb by the Groundhogs, would sound old and dated. Now, a 5 or 6-year-old album would sound no different to a new one. Those albums, like the early Groundhogs, that sounded dated to me forty years ago, now sound fresh, probably because remastering has given them a cleaner sound (although it does not always work this way, ie. Steven Wilson's remaster of Yes's Relayer). Anything by someone like Adele would be new to me, because I do not really listen to much after the early eighties (or up to the mid-nineties at a push).

It's funny really, but I remember as an adolescent, sitting with my friends in Woolworths' tea shop, or on a bus, and seeing teddy boys with DA haircuts and they seemed a real anachronism. Now I am the anachronism, except I haven't got long hair any more.

I share my hairstyle with Phil Collins, Danny DeVito and Bob Hoskins. It didn't do them any harm, so I'm not losing sleep.

I think of music from the 2010s as new and 1980s music and earlier as old. '90s and '00s -- dunno what I'd call them.

I like what Dweezil Zappa said about music. If you've not heard it before it is new music to you. I agree, when it was recorded does not matter when you are looking at experiencing music for the first time. Of course the whole good versus poor music debate quickly comes into whether the music you discover will stay around.

I was introduced to Here Come The Mummies, Gotye, Vulture Industries, Hundred Waters, Manchester Orchestra, Black Widow as well as many others and all have had an element of discovery for me whether they were newly released or 40 years old making all of them new music to me.

Something to think about...

if you've not heard it before it is new music to you. great answer evil-guy.

but also.....
music can be old(as in when it was recorded) and sound "ahead of its time","fresh and new"(no matter how many times you hear it)
likewise, music can be recorded last year and sound "old"

A music never got old. It is evergreen. Only new generation people change the music by adding some extra effects. New generation also love to listen old musics.
