What are you music purchasing habits?

But you haven't answered the question. Do you buy in fits and starts, or buy more or less regularly? And there must be times when you hear something that's old music, but new to you. Do you go and buy it straight away?

Still buying vinyl

Have to say that the best period for me was the 70's. The most creative works were produced during that decade. So I am still buying the odd CD from that era to fill out the collection. In my twenties I would buy 10 or 20 albums a month. Then in my thirties I bought the whole lot again on CD - pretty much reproduced and then expanded my original vinyl collection with the new shiny format. Gave all the vinyl stuff away and apart from the large artwork format can't say I miss it. A headache to keep clean. In my forties I continued to buy CD's at a rapid pace. In my fifties that has slowed down somewhat - I have most of what I want and occasionally I will try something new. I have bought many albums over the years without ever having heard a single note - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Album artwork played a big part in my purchases in my youth as well. Discovered many great artists this way - Peter Gabriel springs to mind. I also buy CD's of complete unknowns when I am on holiday - local musicians, eclectic jazz musicians etc. Being a hobbyist-musician, I like hearing new music - and by that I mean different forms of compositions - not just a new band playing a tried and tested formula. I would have to say that I was very much an impulse buyer in my youth, but far more careful these days. Some things, like Floyd's 'Immersion Sets' were a must-have regardless of the price. Mr Knopfler is another - you just know you are going to get quality no matter what. I like a broad spectrum of music, from Edith Piaf to Electronic. Do not generally buy commercial stuff today but there has been the odd exception, Adele being one. Went through the rock/prog rock phase (teens and 20's), folk (30's), ambient and electronic (40's) and these days I listen to all types of stuff including ethnic music from different countries/cultures. Still like all the old stuff as well. Do NOT listen to EDM, Rap, Hip Hop, Trance, House or Disco-type stuff. No depth to any of it at all. If I ever buy any of these types of music you have my permission to switch off the life-support machine or have me committed to the nearest nuthouse.
