JOY CROOKES "skin" cd, 2021
debut album
released in her homeland (UK) late last year but only released here in early 2022...
has a seductive smokey vocal quality at times which suits the jazzy/bluesy overtones of the music.
think Amy Winehouse's quieter moments as a reference, thus some r+b grooves too...
a really good album that gets better with each listen, just a shame the cover art does not reflect the music within.
that said the album would rate probably 2.2 as a conservative estimate.

FATHER JOHN MISTY "chloe and the 20th century" cd, 2022
his fifth under that name, my fifth too...
original member/songwriter for Fleet Foxes on their first two albums...
a change of sound here, gone are the multi-layered vocals and in come a more commercial sounding style..
songs are still lush, emotive and moving but in come jazz and other pre-rock and roll styles.
theres even a light salsa sounding track to change the mood and a couple of country/folk type tunes too.
another well crafted album from an artist i can always trust to deliver the goods
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

KEITH URBAN "ripcord" cd, 2016
a revisit...
his nineth of twelve...
never really liked his music then on a whim at the beginning of Covid i took the plunge and bought some of his albums from a discount bin...
the experts call him country, he aint country and apart from his first couple of albums fitting the genre the rest of his material is best suited to "soft rock" or "pop"...
a pretty good album overall...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
favourite is the album closer, a ballad.

BILLY JOEL "river of dreams" cd, 1993
a revisit...
soft rock here...
his twelfth of thirteen (the thirteenth is a classical album)...
only two of his 'real' albums that i dislike, the eleventh and twelfth...
very l ittle on here that sounds like Billy musically or vocally and thats what puts me off it for the most part...
so ten tracks, one i love and three others i like, the rest is filler IMO...

ROBBIE WILLIAMS "intensive care" cd, 2005
his sixth studio album after his departure from boy-band Take That...
call it pop if you want but i call it soft-rock for the most part...
his stock standard style...
a solid effort for me and my favourite wasnt even issued as a single.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave has a Smiths style jingle-jangle guitar and the vibe Aussie singer Paul Kelly...

STING "brand new day" cd, 1999.
his sixth solo album of fifteen...
my sixth and final one for seventeen years (added three more since then)...
the album that turned me off him and Police for those seventeen long years...
i used to think this was bland, self absorbed crap from a musician trying to be too clever for his own good...
and that is exactly how i still feel about it, "grandiose self important delusions" is another way to describe it...
very little on here to like for me...
i just hope this does not tarnish my new reenergised enjoyment of his music but...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

DIONNE WARWICK "make way for dionne warwick" vinyl, 1964
from my parents' vinyl collection which has just been handed down to me as they are downsizing to a smaller home....
have around 140 vinyl records off them which i will show soon...
the collection has around eight of Dionne's albums from the 1960s and these are new to me because i have never heard a Dionne studio album...
anyway, to be honest i was underwhelmed by this one, her third, i dont know, i just expected more from someone of Dionne's stature in the industry..
yes there are good songs in this album but i expected more with the Bacharach/David songs at times,
never the less this isnt bad for a first up listen and still looking forward to hearing the other ones of hers i now own

TINA ARENA "don't ask" cd 1994
a revisit...
soft rock/easy listening is where this fits, but could also be in pop at times too..
Aussie songstress with an amazing set of lungs...
she can bellow out a tune as good as anyone IMO...
8x platinum here, platinum also in France and Italy where she is huge...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
