I really like this album - so many good songs but the ones that get to me are 'Turn the Page' & 'Still the Same' - just love them. https://youtu.be/3khH9ih2XJg

Today I am going to listen to the 'Buena Vista Social Club' album with Ry Cooder & Co. One of the finest examples of high quality recording I have ever heard. This really is way beyond most albums in terms of sonic detail. It also helps that the parts were carefully arranged so as not to allow one instrument to mask/obscure another. Each player has their own space in the mix. And some damn good music to boot as well. In terms of music, I give it an 8. In terms of recording - a 10.

And when you have absorbed all that wonderfullness (I agree in every detail), consider a follow-on album, some of which were unreleased songs from the first, others being subsequently recorded--please all keep in mind these were the originators in the '40's and '50's and thus have expired by now. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells II - stunning piece of work - I actually like all the different versions of TB - including the orchestral version. Just an amazing musical experience.

Incidentally, TB II is another example of superb recording. Pristine sound throughout.

HERMANS HERMITS "the very best of" 2005

career stats:
studio albums..........8
singles...................29

this double cd,fifty six track set contains all of their UK "A" and "B" sides...
i love their cheeky tongue-in-cheek songs and their positive happy nature....
lots of highlights here and only one i do not like...
added bonus for me is the original version of "oh you pretty things" which was covered brilliantly by David Bowie a decade or so later...
its so hard for me to choose a favourite with these guys,as it is with Hollies,Manfred Mann,Kinks and Beatles becasue all of them had so many great singles!
too many tracks here for to be bothered in typing out so here's the amazon link to the page for the album:

Steve Winwood's Refugees of the Heart. Can't decide whether or not I like this album. There are some good songs, for sure, but somehow it just doesn't seem to sound as good as it ought to, which is disappointing for an artist of his calibre.

i hear where youre coming from Ruby and youre not alone....

he has this great reputation as an artist but i find him boring, everything just sounds the same to me...
i have his "roll with it" album and im not sure i even liked it after i bought it...

i think his so-called 'genius' came from the fact that he was only 16 when he scored his first hit with Spencer Davis Group in the mid 1960s and the fact his voice was well beyond his years back then....

musicians fall over themselves to get Winwood to play keyboards or vocals on their material, but i personally dont see what all the fuss is about....

like Van Morrison he has been very influential amongst mainly British musicians over the decades but i find both of them boring for the most part.

^Inclined to agree with you on the Winwood front, although I do like the actual music on the album. It's his voice, I think - a +three octave range high tenor and it annoys me! Oh well - to each their own. By all accounts he's a thoroughly nice guy - I have that on good authority from friends who have met him. Ex Island Records people, which leads to the next thought ...

I hadn't listened to David Gilmour's On an Island before now, and that's an entirely different kettle of fish. He has the ability to project such feeling through his instruments - guitar and voice ... and the sax ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJEBN2nH9ds.

With Messrs Nash and Crosby - lovely -
