All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed
#21
242: Not the Red Baron
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Not the red baron
Not Charlie Brown
Think I got the message figured
Another pilot down
And are there devils with halos
In beautiful capes
Taking them into the flames"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vizh8QLcBR8

Ooh... that piano... me gusta :3 But it could do without the phone call. It takes up nearly half the song Sad

241: Do It Again
Spark EP (1998)
"Now you swear and kick and beg us
That you're not a gambling man
Then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards will make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwObVyYR2Hs

A Steely Dan cover. With a bit of Liquid Diamonds, it sounds like? Hmm.

240: The Pool
Winter EP (1992)
"One with her hands open
'Don't be afraid,' she said
'No one will know it, just you and me
And when it's over, I'll go back'"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFQXtLvbz3g

You know, I never liked this one, but I do now because of the absolutely amazing atmosphere. Just listen... OoO

239: Etienne Trilogy
Y Kant Tori Read (1988)
"Maybe you're the knight
Who saved my life
Maybe we faced
The fire side by side
Here we are again
Under the same sky
As the gypsy crystal
Slowly dies"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4ZPkdXesSA

Much closer to the Tori we would know 4 years after. I'm sure some of us did... But I'm not that old... 2007 live version here [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCthQIbnRbU ]

238: Agent Orange
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Yes he's down and there
And everywhere
He's getting an a to z
An underwater city
Where she swims and swims"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjBvR2tOovU

An interesting short one from BFP. A nice little piano part.

237: Graveyard
Caught a Lite Sneeze EP (1996)
"Hey to that old man
I'm coming in the graveyard
With my little tune
It's June, I said"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olixVveGUB4

What a strange little song. What a high rank it has.

236: Losing my Religion
Higher Learning Soundtrack (1995)
"Consider this, consider
The lengths that I would go to
A slip that brought me to my knees
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I said too much
I set it up"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWf0iVV9iog

A cover of REM. It's a beautiful piano part. Some of the singing is a little off though, and a little bit annoying it parts. Still... Why is this classed as higher learning?

235: Sister Janet
Cornflake Girl EP (1994)
"All the angels
All the wizards black and white
Are lighting candles
In our hands
Can you feel them
Touching hands before our eyes
And I can even see
Sweet Marianne"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF_ckz7FfnI

Sooo, Sister Janet. She didn't play this one enough, if you ask me. The line "I can even see sweet Marianne" could be a reference to a song that she released on the album after this came out, as it is a story of something that happened before Tori started releasing songs. The one problem I have with this song is when the piano stays in G# minor but Tori sings in Ab Major. Other than that, it's a good song.

234: Over It
Cornflake Girl EP/God EP (1994)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKKwB2a9Tvo

The better of the two solo piano songs. This definitely tells a story on its own, no lyrics needed. However, it's not the best instrumental song by Tori...

233: Wampum Prayer
Scarlet's Walk (2002)
"In our hand an old old old thread
Trail of blood and amens agreed
Is the gift for the sons of the songs
Hear this prayer of the wampum
This is the tie that will bind us"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiIy_MsIZXg

Short but sweet, as they say.

232: Frog on my Toe
Talula EP (1996)

"Poppa, I know
There's a frog on my toe
Maybe I'll call him Jethro
Maybe I'll grow up to be wise, as good as he
And maybe you'll come back after you're long gone"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4bMRpC47pY (No studio on YT)

Um... kinda cute, I guess Tongue

231: Mary Jane
Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009)
"After all, you'll be away
For the weekend
Just please consent
I need a friend"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWTxSCm83x4

Possibly a prize for Tori's most confusing and random lyrics, B-sides not included. Cool piano, eh.

230: If 6 was 9
Cornflake Girl EP (1994)

"Got my own world
To live through
Ain't gonna come
Near you"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUtEmIiaXQM

229: Rose Dover
Unrepentant Geraldines (2014)
"You don't have to throw it away,
Throw being a kid away
Just because you're growing up
Faster every day
You don't have to throw it all away
You don't have to throw it all away
There's a way"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqaf_E0sJE8

Uh... huh. So many weird changes. Seems very out of place with the rest of the album, and possibly even the rest of her songs. Hmm.

228: Hotel
From the Choirgirl Hotel (1998)
"Met 'em in a hotel
Met 'em in a hotel
You say he's the beiggest thing
There'll be this year"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHsHI20vAfo

Wow. The song the album is named after, is at the bottom of the list for the album?? Yes, this was actually one I was never fond of. Probably because a lot of it is barely pronounced words really high for a long period of time.

227: Strange Fruit
Cornflake Girl EP (1994)

"Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from poplar trees"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ieo5v2DuZkk

Yes, it may be a little surprising to see this even as high as 227/281, but you know what? It's really not a bad song. It's my opinion too, sooo~

226: The Waitress
Under the Pink (1994)
"I want to kill
This killing wish
There's too many stars
And not enough sky
Boys all think
She's living kindness"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTIL9hQb6eI

The album version is actually all right. I know a lot of fans would bite my head off for ranking it so low, as it is quite a big Tori song. It's not that I don't like it, it's just... I think there are so many songs that are EVEN BETTER. The extended version on the double album (To Venus and Back) was one that I used to like, but I got really bored of really fast because of lyrics repeated too many times [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9Od-KIfwnE ]. Although I do think the 2015 version that came to Spain was rockin'! [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTTFRZX7w1E ]

225: Daisy Dead Petals
Pretty Good Year EP (1994)
"And since we're down might as well stay
Might as well fry some eggs
And wave to the shade of the peppermint tray
She's a new friend not a skeleton to ride into town
Knowing what they'll say"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh0hmPb8-WU

3 songs from 1994 in a row? Huh. Never noticed that. This is a nice little B-side.

224: Talula
Boys For Pele (1996)

"Congratulate you
Said you had a double tongue
Balancing cake and bread
Say goodbye to a glitter girl"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X_2eVBJdwU

*Gets threatened with machetes and chainsaws* ...Hear me out.
Ranking a song at number 224 does not mean I think the song is bad. As I said earlier, I like every song ranked 255 and up. It just means that there are 223 songs better than this... Also remember that this list is my opinion partially. Just like it's my opinion that I don't like the sound of the harpsichord and the use of it in this song. I wish she never did use the harpsichord to be perfectly honest. But I can't hate on a song just because it features a harpsichord. This song is actually quite well written. Of course, it's much more well known for the tornado mix, as that was the version included on the album. [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgHlNeoAH1A ]

223: Pandora's Aquarium
From the Choir Girl Hotel (1998)
"She's in New York somewhere
Checking her accounts
The Lord of the Flies was
Diagnosed as sound"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6a3vsxdCQM

Very strange, yes. Especially the key changes. It's a song that I never really liked, and it took a while for it to grow on me. I like it enough now for it to be ranked this far into the "like" category...

222: Sleeps With Butterflies
The Beekeeper (2005)
"Balloons look good from on the ground
I fear with pins and needles around
We may fall then stumble
Upon a carousel
It could take us anywhere"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2ZASCOFRtg

It fits in with the general theme of the album quite well, but this one is not one I consider "great". The reason for this being it really lacks her normal uniqueness. It's just a little too... simple. At least compared to most of her other songs. Still, it's not bad enough for me to dislike it Wink

221: Mr. Zebra
Boys For Pele (1996)

"Figure it out
She's a good time fella
She's got a little fund to fight
For MoneyPenny's rights
Figure it out
She's a good time fella
Too bad the burial was premature
She said and smiled"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXY1GVC4gec

Two words: Too short! Such a good tune, but there should be MORE!

220: Flying Dutchman
China EP (1992)
"'Cause they can't see
What you're born to be
They can't see me
They can't be
What they can't believe
They can't see what you see"

https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ-aNtnDwxI

So, this seems harsh even from my point of view because I really like this song. It got a higher quality upgrade in Gold Dust, but I don't like the whole album because it lost the dynamics of all the songs. Upgrading the songs with orchestra wasn't a bad idea, it just wasn't well executed! Gold Dust was not an album I found incredibly enjoyable, but it was at least a bit more enjoyable than Y Kant Tori Read.

219: Happy Phantom
Little Earthquakes (1992)
"Or will I see you dear
And wish I could come back
You found a girl
That you could truly love again
Will you still call for me
When she falls asleep
Or do we soon forget
The things we cannot see"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLWkNa2H0lw

Possibly one of the most "plinky" songs she's written. I quite like it.

218: Horses
Boys For Pele (1996)
"I got me
Some horses
To ride on
To ride on
They say that
Your demons
Can't go there"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8PmtpNr9zg

*Gets threatened with machetes and chainsaws* ...Hear me out.
While I love the piano-keyboard-thing in this piece, the parts when she sings are just too repetitive. Harsh, maybe, as I know a lot of people love this song, but this is my opinion. I like this song, it just has its problems. The 2007 live version with the band was quite good too. [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrZtyTs-S8M ]

217: Beulah Land
Jackie's Strength EP (1998)
"Got some candy
And a sweet saying
Give me religion
And a lobotomy"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMe9J-bF62w

A well-known hymn written by Edgar Page Stites. A nice version of the song by Tori. All good.

216: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Spark EP (1998)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwX62HL2vKo
I'm sure we all know this song! It's a Christmas song, and a very nice rendition.

(Sorry for the short and vague descriptions today, I'm in a rush!)

215: Glory of the 80's
To Venus and Back (1999)

"I said, I don't find that remotely funny
Even on this space cake high
And then when it all seemed clear
Just then you go and disappear"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTKvEQhDR50

I have to say, I'm not particularly fond of the album version of this song, but not enough to put it on the dislike part of the list. It's still not bad, it just feels a little bit bland. The 2007 live version I quite liked however, since it also had piano. [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WexIGzZWIvM ]

214: That Guy
Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009)
"That Guy
Cannot seem to see
There are no other guys
But the one he used to be"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i3nQGls5do

I know a lot of people have a problem with this song for being weird, but look at how weird it is compared to the rest of the album. Not very much. I don't really have a problem with song at all.

213: Professional Widow
Boys For Pele (1996)
"Rest your shoulder
Peaches and cream
Everywhere a Judas
As fast as you can see
Beautiful angel
Calling
'We got every re-run of Muhammad Ali'"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QcB6O4Uytg - EXPLICIT WARNING

No no, I'm not talking about the remix which seems to be the only version anyone knows. This is the album version. The GOOD one. Not that god-awful annoying remix. I would rank this higher, but with this list I'm taking all versions into account, so unfortunately this was ranked fairly low. Also, I had no idea Tori could get this dirty! Then I heard Pip performing live in 2007, and yeah...
