All Tori Amos songs - Ranked & Reviewed
#41
Wander Wrote:I quite like Tori Amos. Interesting to see this sort of a personal list although my preferences already seem to diverge quite a bit as you have already gone through several songs that would probably make my top 50. But I'm interested to see where you are going with the top picks.
Well, it's nice to have another Tori fan following c:
Songs like Hotel and Waitress... I'm surprised at how low I let them be, same as Space Dog and Mr. Zebra. Muhammed my Friend certainly isn't a bad one, it was a little low I guess. Beauty Queen/Horses I just find a little bit repetitive though. Caught a Lite Sneeze and Doughnut Song are both really good songs. Although I was never too much of a fan of 1,000 Oceans. But you might notice that I haven't included many of the songs that the fans really seem to hate yet, such as Ireland, Not Dying Today, Hoochie Woman, China, Mary...

191: I'm Not in Love
Strange Little Girls (2001)
"I'm not in love
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase
I'm going through
And just because
I call you up
Don't get me wrong
Don't think you've got it made"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_fiVbGJCmY

Interesting intro. Certainly could do with being shorter. It's actually a hard one for me to remember because it doesn't really have an ensemble. Just Tori singing along to the computer generated percussion. I gave it a place here because she tried something new.

190: SnowBlind
Night of Hunters (2011)

"Just imagine him
There upon that hill
Over 3000 years
From now 'til then"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1U5ds0Bi7E

The first entry on this list from the orchestra album. I'm not a huge fan of the album, probably because it doesn't feel like Tori Amos to me. In this particular song she sings with her daughter, Natashya, who was only 10 or 11 years old at the time. This one was on the list of the top 25 worst, though. I don't mind it. It's definitely not a bad song. Although the line "Were you giants or friends?" is kind of... well, weird. Not sure how it makes sense.

189: Never Seen Blue
Jackie's Strength EP (1998)

"You said, girl if you think
You can turn that violator
You'll finally be that woman, yes
Finally be that woman
That's been frozen
In that pretty silver gown, yes"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMXNeVvAGkY

Okay, LOVE this one. Sadly, it's here on the list. But I guess there are more better ones to come! (Mind you, I said that with Alamo, but IMO I ranked Alamo way too darn low.)

Ohhh yeah... I guess I'm verging towards the consensus opinion there as Ireland and Hoochie Woman being ahead of any of the songs I mentioned ought to be some kind of a crime. China, Mary, and Not Dying Today are passable, but not great. But you have to understand that I'm one of those sad folks who have a very natural negative response to most music attempting to sound happy, uplifting, light-hearted or any of those weird positive things. Although I still think Mr. Zebra is one of the best songs, so go figure...

Maybe I'll think of my personal top something list for laffs. If I find the time to go through the albums thinking about it, that is.

Not sure if you're talking about Wander and myself, or Wander and yourself.

188: Sweet Dreams
Winter EP (1992)
Tales of a Librarian (2003)
"Land, land of liberty
We're run by a constipated man
When you live in the past you refuse to see
When your daughter comes home nine months pregnant
With five billion points of light
Gonna shine 'em on the face of your friends
They got the earth in a sling, the world on their knees
They even got a zipper between their teeth"

I actually prefer the EP version of this song, since she sounds rather bored sometimes in the re-record. This is one of the songs that started to slowly grow away from me as well, kind of like the whole Boys For Pele album did.

187: Time
Strange Little Girls (2001)
"Well the smart's money's on Harlow
And the moon is in the street
The shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you're east of St. Louis
And the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPrpqm6iQRI

Another interesting cover. I think she picked too low a key though, which is a shame. Her voice isn't hitting all the notes properly and I think the lower notes of the piano someTIMEs don't sound too good. Shame really.

186: Ribbons Undone
The Beekeeper (2005)

"She runs like a fire does
Just picking up daisies
Comes in for a landing
A pure flash of lightening
Past alice blue blossoms
You follow her laughter
And then she'll surprise
Arms full of lavender"

Okay... WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? What on earth is wrong with this song? You don't like how the song is about her daughter? The "my little pony" line was a mistake I guess, but still. And I'm not a fan of the electric guitar part either, but aside from that, what can you say? Something wrong about singing a song about your daughter?

Sooo... I seem to have done something very very dumb. After a realization that I hadn't yet included Black Swan on the list, I did Ctrl+F on my document, and it was nowhere to be found. I don't really want to change all the numbers on this list so...
I would place it somewhere close to Sister Janet.

Just edit your posts...
Or alternatively just give it the same number as another to mean its of equal standing
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

185: Mary
China EP (1992)
Tales of a Librarian (2003)

"Rivers of milk are running dry
Can't you hear the dolphins crying
What'll we do when our babies scream
Fill their mouths with some acid rain"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3foamAj0aSg

There are quite a few opinions on this. Which version is better, the original or the re-record? Personally I think the re-record is the best. But did we need to see this appear on the list of her worst songs?

184: Little Amsterdam
Boys For Pele (1996)

"Don't take me back to the range
I'm just coming out of the cell in my brain
Girl you got to know these days
Which side you're on"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udTOgn9D0ZQ

This was quite a popular one. I think it drags on a little too much though... it seems like the same thing over and over. It's pretty good though, as long as it's not being performed as a solo, where it's dead boring.

183: Yo George
American Doll Posse (2007)

"I salute to you commander
And I sneeze
'Cause I have now an allergy
To your policies it seems"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdcWIQgiBpY

Soooo, I'm not sure any fans would expect to see this song up here. It's so short, and not much happens in it. The message is clear (why was George in power once, let alone twice anyway?) and the piano is quite good. The band version was better [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PV8E6rYNkg ].
