What Are You Listening To?
I'm another one who never "got" Talking Heads. I think David Byrne's voice has a lot to do with it; to me it sounds like the voice of a guy selling tickets for rides at an amusement park. I think they were better when they just played it straight without trying to sound arty. "Wild Wild Life" wasn't a bad song.

I agree with that comment, I thought their latter material was better than their earlier material.

only albums I have of theirs are the last three (on vinyl only)

career stats:

singles...............19

this album..............#12 US...#10 CAN
singles:
"fly".......................#1 US...#31 US
"RPM"....................no chart action

second album from this Californian band...
music?
well, to me its a cross between the simple rap of Beastie Boys and the early sound of Red Hot Chilli Peppers....
scored their one and only #1 hit rom this album in "fly",
strange also, there is an excellent cover of Adam & The Ants' "stand and deliver", which I love almost as much
as I love the original....
all up, not a bad album, repetitive in places but its still okay.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

I listened to them a lot at one stage – mostly by default … they were reasonably controversial which was very attractive, and excellent for parties!

I’ve held on to Remain in Light which IMHO is a real stand out - their last album with inputs from Brian Eno. What they did on this was actually quite ground-breaking in ways I wasn’t paying all that much attention to at the time – especially in terms of recording and production and the way the sounds lay a complex background for the vocals but not in an orthodox form.

I like this quote from a Rolling Stone reviewer - "Remain in Light yields scary, funny music to which you can dance and think, think and dance, dance and think, ad infinitum."

looks like that leap to being a TH fan wouldn't be hard for you
after Byrne's work with Eno on My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts
didn't much care for the album myself but I think you would

I agree Ruby, their layered sound textures were fantastic, even on old vinyl they sound good,
I can only imagine how good the clarity would be in the cd format!
now I think about it, I believe I have a compilation cd lying around somewhere??!

Bryne, is also a very intelligent man, his lyrics often had double meanings and also entwined
with passages and subtle comments about their religious beliefs...
I bet most of the people who like these guys have no idea about the subliminal messages in their
songs, videos and album covers...

there aren't many artists who you would consider "original",
obviously Bowie, Prince, Pink Floyd, Sex Pistols and maybe a couple more and I would throw
Talking Heads in that category also.

you know who would have been a good pairing.....?

David Byrne and David Bowie,
both unique, both on their own 'mental plane', I think they would have related well with each other
and worked well together!

career stats:
studio albums.......7
singles................23

this album............#6 UK...#72 AU
singles:
"outsiders"............no chart action
"like kids".............no chart action

album #7 from this UK alt rock band and the only one I own...
I love the band but there was always something else I really wanted t get when they released albums and so
I never got round to buying any...
their sound for the majority of the time is probably pretty close to The Verve...
nothing bad on this, their latest release, a couple of nice ballads to mix things up a little bit,
its a damn shame I have to wait until the last track to hear my favourite song on the album!
