DAVID BOWIE "pinups" cd, 1973

career stats:
studio albums.....28
singles..............121

this album............#1 UK...#4 AU...#23 US
singles:
"sorrow".............#3 UK...#1 AU

Bowie's eighth studio set and second from 1973....
songs are covers of which the originals were released in the UK between 64-67...
album was supposed to highlight rarely heard and obscure songs that the Americans missed out on...
he had plans to initially release two of these albums but didn't follow through with the second album...
all these songs on here are given a distinct Bowie feel...he put his own stamp on all these tracks to make them 'his own'...
at least half the album doesn't work for me....
and to be fair, there are several original versions I have never heard so I don't know if they are good or bad neither...
its impossible to go past his cover of The Merseys' "sorrow"...IMO, this song could have been a Bowie original...
theres covers on here from The Who. Kinks, Pink Floyd, Easybeats to name a few...
IMO, he adds nothing to some of these...and no one, I mean, no one should ever be allowed to cover The Who.
Bowie albums to me are generally brilliant or terrible and its always hit or miss, but even the bad ones usually contain a couple
of great tracks, but not in this case...one great track, a few okay one tracks and six terrible ones...

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: anyway, anyhow, anywhere
best track: sorrow

DAVID BOWIE "Aladdin sane" cd, 1973

career stats:
studio albums........27
singles.................121

this album.................#1 UK...#7 AU...#17 US...#20 CAN
singles:
"the jean genie".........................#2 UK...#42 AU...#71 US
"drive-in-saturday".....................#3 UK
"time".......................................no chart action
"lest spend the night together".....no chart action

Mr.Bowie's sixth studio album...
lots of Glam Rock on this one and I love the UK Glam Rock sound of the 1970s...
trivia:
album was originally titled "love Aladdin vein" but the label vetoed the title because it had too many
drug connotations, so Bowie then came up with "a lad insane" because that's how people viewed him,
his music and his image back then but eventually settling on the current title.
one cover on here, a Stones one in "lets spend the night together", was never a fan of the original so
it was always doubtful i'd like this cover...
normally you'd look at the track list and think "jean genie" would be the best track, but theres several on here
to rival that one which shows the quality of the guy's material back then,
best for me is the slow burner "the prettiest star" which would without a doubt be in my top five Bowie tracks of all time,
how this was never issued as a single I will never know...
and finally, a Bowie album that rivals 1979's "lodger" for me as his best album!

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

BRANDON FLOWERS "the desired effect" cd, 2015.

singles:
"cant deny my love".....#109 UK
"i can change"..............#52 UK
"still want you..............no chart action
"lonely town"...............no chart action

vocalist/songwriter for The Killers returns with his second solo set...
I could have put this one in the pop thread as its probably a lot closer to that genre than alternative...
nothing like his work with Killers on this one, I guess that's why he has gone away twice to do his own thing...
nothing on here I don't like, ive even got used to the track that features minimal use of the vocorder (which I despise!)...
backing vocals on this one by Neil Tennant from Pet Shop Boys, gives you a bit of an idea where Flowers was heading with this one...
my favourite track is the closest thing to a real Killers song...
all up, not a bad album, nothing great on it and nothing as good as The Killers albums, but a decent album in its own right IMO...

this album........#2 US...#3 AU...#3 CAN...#2 UK...#2 NZ
singles:
"oh love"..............#97 US...#45 CAN
"kill the DJ".........#110 UK
"let yourself go"...#193 UK

album number nine for these guys...
the first of three released between September and December of 2012...
I have the other two albums also, I just haven't got round to posting them yet, in fact, theyre still
sealed in their factory seal....
musically its got their latter day melodic sounds as opposed to the chaotic crashing punk of their early
albums...
lyrically, its still riddled with the sarcastic/biting overtones of social conscience...
there is a bit of language on this album, the f-bomb is dropped a few times, but thankfully its all done over
three maybe four tracks and not throughout the album...
it sounds like youd expect from Green Day, so youre either going to like it or youre not depending on your
opinion of these guys...my, im a fan.

second and final studio set from this alt rock band from here in Perth....
they call them alt rock, no rock on here, just alternative sounds...
I hear bits of The National on here in places..
some nice harmonies in places also, like on my favourite track...
lots of filler and nothing outstanding...
album only sold around 50,000 copies so its no wonder they were dropped from
their label after this one...

ST VINCENT "strange mercy" cd, 2011

career stats:
studio albums......5
singles...............11

this album.............#19 US...#63 CAN...#117 UK
singles:
"surgeon"..............no chart action
"cruel"..................no chart action
"cheerleader"........no chart action

picked this one up out of a discount bin or a couple of bucks a while ago...
one of those  'don't know who they are-surprise' purchases....
I hear bits of Portishead here and there, the difference, Portishead are totally electronic,
this is full of real instruments including a few we rarely here in modern pop like Clavinet,
Clarinet, Flute and Saxaphone along with the mini Moog organ...
some of this is a bit arty but it works, some is atmospheric which emits emotion to compliment
the singing/theme of the lyrics, other stuff is almost commercially radio friendly...
strange that two of the three singles released of here are the two tracks I dislike, whilst the other
is one of the tracks I love.
not a bad album.
