Role of Music in Our World
#1
Music is the language of God, praise to the deities, and expression of the soul. It is a game of sound and silence, an artwork and a form of communication. Originated in the Paleolithic era, it continues to spread its wings and win hearts. ‘MUSIC’, in Ancient Greek, means ‘The Art of Muses’, i.e. work inspired by God. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal dexterity, ranging from singing to rapping.
Music is divided into different genres like pop, rock, Indie, R&B, country and genres are subdivided into categories like country blues and pop country. Every genre emphasizes or deemphasizes different elements of music ( pitch, rhythm, harmony, tempo, meter, articulation), and can also be defined by the musical techniques, the style, the cultural context, the content and spirit of the themes, sometimes being the identifying factor of geographical location.
Music can be primarily divided into three categories: art music, focusing on contemporary and historical music, popular music, the form much loved by and accessible to the public and circulated by the media, and traditional music, the old, long living cultural or folk music.
Music and Society: Music and society are deeply intertwined and the bond is becoming stronger due to its wide accessibility. Music is a powerful tool and a strong medium of communication, and in some societies, has been controlled. Because of its power to carry the message to a social level, communication can go beyond words and enables meanings to be shared, and promotes the development and maintenance of an individual, group, cultural and national identities.
Since it can trigger different responses from an individual- psychological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral, this medium has a robust effect on individual level. Music, in conclusion, mobilizes and inspires people to think differently and take action.
Music and Economy: Music, in various degrees, contributes to the economy. Countries like the US, Germany, and Korea have contributed significantly to music because of own industries, and music there is a major source of revenue and employment. In 2015, the music industry in Germany generated €11 billion in revenue and employed over 125,000 people, according to a new cross-sector report on the economic impact of music across the national economy.
This form of art business surpasses the revenue generated from books, poetry and crafts. A music genre and its popularity in other countries also help improve relations, and selling music to different countries increase foreign exchange flow.
Music and Therapy: Music is known to have restorative qualities and so is used to treat patients dealing with physical, social, inner and apprehensive needs. Once the strengths and needs of the patient are appraised, several techniques like singing, creating, moving to, and/ or listening to music, are used by a qualified music therapist. This helps buoy up the clients’ abilities that are then transferred to other areas of their lives. Music helps boost one’s expression, motivating them to become part of the society and at the same time providing an outlet for emotional support for their friends, families and clients.
