I am anxious to find some new music to listen to. I have been a music fan for over 40 years and have a wide and varied collection but, I would like to know
What do you think I should listen to
and
why do you think it is exciting /interesting to listen to?

I'll give you a few, without knowing your tastes:
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Floyd's story of the emotional disintegration of a "fictitious" rock star. Stunning music, brilliantly recorded, with lyrics to ponder & explore.
Bjork - Homogenic
My favourite Bjork album, combing ingenious beats & winning melodies. Strange, but accessible.
Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America
Similarly strange, but has a more "Country" feel than the above. O'Hara has a genuinely beautiful voice.
Pixies - Doolittle
Powerful, yet melodic songs, with lots of scuzzy guitars.
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Darklands
One of their more restrained albums. More scuzzy feedback-laden guitars, with songs that borrow heavily from the 60s girl groups, in combination with the sleaze of the Velvet Underground.
Maybe a bit mainstream, but let's see where this goes...

If anyone asks this question I generally say 'Patrick Wolf' - he's pretty cross-genre - singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist.
Try his first album 'Lycantropy' or his last one 'The Batchelor' and then you can work through his back cataolgue in your preferred direction, if you like his stuff.

Excellent suggestions Tiggi!!... I second his post.. those are great suggestions..
I have never heard Patrick Wolf, just wiki'd him.. seems like the kind of music, I have been wanting to listen for a while.
My suggestions:-
Try The Clash for punk music.
The Skids - Another punk band.
The Tea Party for decent rock music with great innovative sounds.
Temper Trap - If you like a bit of electronic rock music.. (it's really hard to define this band in a genre.) But just give them a try, you wont regret.
Wolfmother - If you like Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple.. Then check out this one.
Please do let us know what kind of music you like, so we could suggest some new genres & artists based on that.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! When I posted this thread I was in two minds as to whether to put in my tastes or not...........As my aim was to find new things to listen to and as my tastes are wide, I decided to start without stating my tastes and then wait until I was asked..............

Keyboard Rock Emerson Lake and Palmer,Vander Graaf Generator, The Nice ,Tomita
Progressive Rock: Yes, Genesis,The Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac
American Garage Music  ebbles 1 to 12
Male Vocal : Glen Campbel Clifford T.Ward, Frank Sinatra, Bowie
Female Shina Twain,Kate Bush
Jazz etc Dave Brubeck Oscar Peterson
Punk Etc : The Clash, The Jam, Kraftwerk OMD

I like those 4 bands. Thanks for passing them along.
My list will look a lot like many others, with all of the classics. As for a few more obscure things I'm into, which may or may not be on your list...
Funk: Betty Davis
Post-punk (or whatever you'd call it): Joy Division, Gang of Four
Goth Metal (or whatever): Lacuna Coil
Bluegrass/Jam: Yonder Mountain String Band

I'd recommend film music. The genre goes well beyond the Star Wars-style big orchestral stuff - which is fantastic, don't get me wrong - to encompas all styles of music.
Film music is written to underline mood or place or time. So there's all sorts out there.
As a taster, I'd recommend:
John Barry's Somewhere In Time, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever.
Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West and The Untouchables.
Roy Budd's Kidnapped and Get Carter
Fred Karlin's Westworld
Some compilations can be pretty good as well. Varese Sarabande have a couple of collections with - I think - four CDs each.
If you do buy anything, try to aim for the original soundtrack recording because some of the cheaper cover versions may put you off.
