We have had many threads on this forum about your favourite album (desert island album for want of a better expression) and I have a number on the list but I would have to say this is going to be my final choice. I always return to this album, no matter what - it showcases everything I like about music, it has electronic elements, jazz elements, prog-rock elements, ambient elements, intelligent lyrics and the best artwork to date I have seen on an album cover. Yes, I agree, I probably need therapy but I am waiting for the day someone tops this. I can't see it happening soon - https://youtu.be/YLIy2t-KAc0?list=PLfimn...6cdkxIxe2H

![]() QUEEN "the works" cd/vinyl 1984 career stats: studio albums................15 singles..........................72 this album.....................#2 UK...#12 AU...#23 US...#9 NZ...#22 CAN singles: "radio gaga"...................#2 UK....#2 AU...#16 US....#4 NZ "i want to break free"......#3 UK....#8 AU...#45 US....#6 NZ "its a hard life"...............#6 UK...#65 AU...#72 US..#30 NZ "hammer to fall"...........#13 UK...#69 AU not as bad as the one that preceeded it...Hot Space but still very, very average for a Queen album IMO... I really went off these guys when they decided to bring in synthesizers as their instrument of choice in the 1980s.... songs are very average overall also... "radio ga ga" says it all..."ga ga", a toddler could have written it IMO..."el lame-o!"... very little to champion about the songs except for "hammer to fall" and "i want to break free" as "real" Queen songs, "man on the prowl" is pretty goodalso, but some might say they were running out of ideas and tried to recreate "crazy little thing called love" with that latest Rockabilly track... album totally flopped in the US for three reasons... 1: radio ailed to get behind the opening single "radio ga ga" 2: MTV banned the video for "i want to break free" because the band dressed in female clothes??? really, they banned a video for that, they obviously had no idea of how bad videos would get! and: 3: Queen refused to tour the US in the summer o 1984 to promote the album because of reasons 1 and 2! all up, passable, but not their greatest work! basically, the best thing about playing and posting a Queen album is that I check out live clips of the band on YT and IMO Freddie Mercury was the greatest showman when he was on stage! I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: machines best track: hammer to fall tracks: 1...radio ga ga * 2...tear it up ** 3...its a hard life ** 4...man on the prowl ** 5...machines * 6...I want to break free *** 7...keep passing the open windows ** 8...hammer to fall *** 9...is this the world we created * 3s=2 2s=4 1s=3 rating: 1.8

![]() COLD CHISEL "breakfast at sweethearts" cd/vinyl, 1979. career stats: studio albums................9 singles.........................27 this album..................#4 AU singles: "goodbye Astrid, goodbye"......#65 AU "breakfast at sweethearts"......#63 AU "shipping steel"......................no chart action! Aussie rock, barroom/pub rock, blues rock band from primarily the late 70s-mid 80s.... these guys were the only real rivals AC/DC had on the Aussie charts and AC/DC's only rivals also.... lots of blues rock on here, a ballad or two also... all with Jimmy Barnes' gravelly raspy husky vocals that spent a lot of time nursing vodka by the bottle! only two great tracks on this one, the ballad "breakfast at sweethearts" and the rocker "shipping steel"... both were issued as singles, i'd have thought both would have charted higher than they did, infact, my favourite o the two didn't even chart as a single!!!! as a footnote, you never knew what you were going to get when you saw these guys live back in the day, just like the likes of Oasis and INXS you could get the greatest live gig you ever saw or undoubtably, the worst you eve saw.. I only saw these guys once, they were support act for Roc Stewart on his Aussie tour around 1980, and Cold Chisel were abysmal, they were staggering round drunk on stage, could barely play their instruments or remember the words to their songs! all up, a good album, sounds a bit dated now and stuck in the late 1970sbut hey, a lot of albums have their place and time! I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: showtime best track: shipping steel tracks: 1...conversations ** 2...merry-go-round ** 3...Dresden ** 4...goodbye Astrid, goodbye ** 5...plaza ** 6...shipping steel *** 7...im gonna roll ya ** 8...showtime * 9...breakfast at sweethearts *** 10.the door * 3s=2 2s=6 1s=2 rating: 2.0

Listening to Billy Sherwoodâs Citizen. Itâs a concept album of sorts, for each song placing a citizen of the world in a certain context and era â some titles, for example, âThe Great Depressionâ, âThe Age of the Atomâ, âEmpireâ, and so on. There are contributions on this release from Chris Squire (his last recording), Alan Parsons, Rick Wakeman, Steve Hackett and many more. Some tracks I enjoyed more than others â and while it doesnât absolutely enthral me, on the whole it seems very nicely executed, intelligent, and not too overblown, which is such a relief â itâs always a fine line IMHO and the balance can so easily be upset!
May have to listen again, but this song is my favourite so far, with Colin Moulding of XTC taking the lead vocal â âJust Galileo and Meâ ⦠

^^ To be honest, it's very hard to have anything go wrong if Alan Parsons is involved.

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:COLD CHISEL "breakfast at sweethearts" cd/vinyl, 1979.Cold Chisel were just starting to get noticed when I left the country to travel around South America. When I returned in 1980 they were the biggest thing in Oz. Some of their earlier songs were a little bit too bluesy for my liking, and I can see how they might be a good support choice for Rod Stewart. However I really liked East, which I consider probably their best album. I'll take Cold Chisel over AC/DC anytime. |
