PAUL & LINDA McCARTNEY "ram" 1971, vinyl/cd/ deluxe reissue boxset.

solo career stats:
studio albums................36
singles..........................77

this album..............................#1 UK...#3 AU...#1 CAN...#1 US
singles:
"Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"...............#5 AU...#1 CAN...#1 US
"backseat of my car"..............#39 UK
"eat at home".....................................#21 AU

revisiting this old classic....
Macca's second solo album after the Beatle split...
album is quite earthy, rootsy, and sparse in places, and rocky in other places...
most of this stuff would have fitted on either "abbey road", "let it be" or even "the white album"
if given the chance....
the song "dear boy" was a Beatle passing shot at John, soory, but Paul just couldn't help himself by fueling
the feud between them, he did it well into the decade (and on several occasions John returned the barbs)...
trivia:
no singles were originally slated for release off this album then the Aussie radio stations started playing "uncle albert"
and fans wanted to know why they couldn't buy it, EMI issued it as a single here and the rest of the world except the UK
followed suit where they issues the piano based slow rocker "backseat of my car"...
im surprised that the album didn't quite make the love rating when I played it which I find extraordinary because this is one
of my McCartney "go to albums" when I want to hear him...
either way, a very good collection of songs from The Mac!....

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

John's classic dig at Paul was 'How Do You Sleep'. A very cynical song. (But good).

Yeh, love the line,

"the only thing you done was yesterday, but since you're gone its just another day"

I have Lennon's demo of that song, he really spits the venom when he sings "how do ya sleep...ya c###"

Paul actually started the feud on record, "teddy boy" on his debut self titled album and the pic of two beetles screwing on the back cover of the same album

JIMMY BARNES "rage and ruin" cd, 2010:

solo career stats:
studio albums..............15
singles........................63

this album....................#3 AU...#20 NZ
singles:
"before the Devil knows youre dead"....no chart action
"God or money"................................no chart action
"Largs Pier Hotel"..............................no chart action

Jimmy's thirteenth studio album....
passes the grade for me, but barely....
the least likeable one of his I own....
back to his bluesy rock/pub rock roots on this one...
album came about when he was going over his own writings of overcoming
his alcohol abuse decades earlier and he decided to write an album based on those feelings
he had at the time, thus its a very dark depressing album to listen to....
only reached #3 on our charts in Australia, making it the second worst charting album of his
long and illustrious career, also became one of only a rare few that didn't achieve platinum
status here, I guess im not the only one who thought it was depressing and depressive in nature...
all three singles also failed to chart here....
im surprised it didn't make him take up the booze again....LOL!
all up, very-very average by his standards....

I used to have a book about George Martin and his work with The Beatles. In it he stated that Paul was the really creative force within the group. There has always been this argument about who was better, but he was quite adamant that most of the ideas came from McCartney. I am sure some Lennon fans will not be amused but it is what it is.

I think George was in a league of his own as a producer and anybody who was anybody would have loved the chance to have him
work with them or at least get advice from him.

Paul McCartney "mccartney II" 1980 vinyl,cd and deluxe boxset cd

solo career stats:
studio albums..................36
singles............................77

this album..................#1 UK...#6 AU...#3 US
singles:
"coming up"...............#2 UK....#2 AU...#1 CAN...#1 US
"waterfalls"................#9 UK..#31 AU
"temporary secretary".....no chart action

back in the midsts of time again with this one...
Macca's first truly solo set since the debut "McCartney" back in 1970...
was never intended as a commercial release....
Paul had just built a new home studio and loaded it up with all the latest recording gadgets
and was simply playing around trying to get used to the new hardware etc...
Ringo went to his house for dinner one night and asked if he had any new material,
Paul let him hear the tracks that eventually made the album...
when Ringo heard them he apparently said "oh, so this is your new sound and new album then",
after a few seconds pause Paul replied "i guess it is" or words to that effect....
lots of electronic sounds on here (synths) along with regular instruments....
Paul wrote, produced and played every instrument with Linda chipping in for a couple of backing vocals...
Paul has always said the album sounds unfinished to him but likes the sounds he got from basically half baked demo tracks....
sure, you can hear that its not polished, but that's the quaint attraction to it for me, wasn't always that way though,
I used to think it was fairly average but its grown on me a lot over the last couple of years....
Dani isn't a McCartney fan by any means but she loves this album for some reason....
album contains a couple of ballads, several rootsy blues rockers that wouldn't sound out of place on a Steve Miller album,
a couple of synthed up instrumental pieces, a couple of muck around experimental pieces and of course the huge hit "coming up"...
strange thing about that single is that in the UK/AU etc the studio version was issued as the "A" side but in the US the single was flipped
over and the live version by Wings became the "A" side, either way it became a #1 hit in the US and the studio version was top10
just about everywhere else...
I absolutely adore the quirky third single "temporary secretary", apart from its annoying repetitive synth work, it would not be out
of place on an album like Abbey Road, nor would "one of these days" (my favourite on the album) or "summers day song"...
all up, a very good album that has really grown on me of late...
