I knew this album "Skeleton Tree" would get under my skin and crush me. I feel tears, it's heartbreaking.

third album from this UK alt rock band...
music on this flits between blues rock, classic rock and alt rock...
some nice material on this one but sadly, nothing great...
a nice listen from a band that probably deserves a bit more success than they've gotten so far....

MICK FLANNERY "red to blue" cd, 2012

career stats:
studio albums............4

this album...............#1 IRE

Irish singer/songwriter...
third album of four and only one I own...
Wiki shows nothing for single releases, so im guessing he just releases his albums without them??...
picked up from a discount bin for a couple of bucks....
slightly folky, slightly alternative also....
mainly ballads on here but a couple of uptempo tracks also...
the uptempo ones are my favourite on here....
as an unknown singer in 2006, pre contract, he journeyed to Nashville to try his hand
at the "international songwriting competition", which he won, grand final night of the award
show was judged by his idol Tom Waits, so a double win for Flannery...
his other idols (musically) are Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan...
theres some of their poet styles in some of the songs but I fail to hear Waits on any track here...
all up, not a bad album, although it doesn't score too high, I think I would give him a go with another
album if I ever saw one in a discount bin

TRAVIS "singles" cd, 2004

career stats:
studio albums.............8
singles......................24

this album...................#4 UK...#18 AU
singles:
"walking in the sun"......#20 UK

Scottish alt rock band....
this compilation was released between their fourth and fifth album...
released their last album this year but I never heard it...
own three of their studio albums, all early ones that this one covers...
problem I have with this one is that the tracks are not in chronological order
which is the way I like my compilations to be, if only to hear how an artist progresses
through the years, yes I know I could pre programme the tracks to play in that order,
but im too lazy to spend five minutes doing that...
anyway,on with the music...
they call them alt rock, theyre not rock by any means, theyre light and melodic...
their music often has what I call a 'jingle-jangle' sound, sort of like The Byrds in places
with the lovely harmonies also...
their biggest and best known hit "why does it always rain on me?" is still a superb track IMO
but its another from the same studio album that is my all time fave of theirs in "writing to reach you"

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Paul McCartney "McCartney II" reissued boxset, 2011

DISC 2:

ive already posted the original album on MD,
this is the second disc that came in the "archives - remastered" boxset in 2011...
it contains the b-sides of the singles, the non-album single "wonderful Christmastime"
and some unreleased material....
some of this stuff on here was very experimental ala the work he later did as The Fireman...
mostly it is electronic material as Macca played around with his then, newly set up home studio...
most of this album is rubbish IMO but it shows he was pushing the boundaries of popular music well
after the break up of the Beatles...

I DO NOT LIKE THIS DISC

worst track: secret friend
best track: Mr H Atom

with the attached link, my favourite track is the first two and a half minutes,
the rest is "you know i'll get you baby"...

PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION "around the world in a day" cd, 1985

career stats:

this album....................#1 US...#12 AU...#16 CAN...#5 UK
singles:

"paisley park"...........................#38 AU.................#18 UK
"pop life".....................#7 US...#67 AU.................#60 UK
"America"..................#46 US

"the purple one's" seventh studio album....
a whole lot less radio friendly than his previous release "purple rain"...
infact, a lot less of everything after that one also...
its a lot more psychedelic in sound than his previous albums...
music is more serious for the most part, like he is trying to be too clever...
some good stuff on here but not enough for me to like it overall...
interesting to know that George Clinton loved the album, so who am I to say
whats good or bad...
the music press were divided on this one, some loved it, others hated it saying
the sometimes unusual sounds and cryptic lines were Prince trying to rip off "sgt peppers",
a fact Prince had always denied, then theres the cover art, that got criticised too in some quarters
with its so called 'hidden mesages', again, like "sgt peppers"...
either way, it sold around seven million copies worldwide, so I guess Prince couldn't care less what
the so called experts thought of it...

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: conditions of the heart

IGGY POP "the idiot" cd, 1977

career stats:
studio albums..................20
singles............................15

this album.............#72 US...#30 UK
singles:
"sister midnight".....no chart action
"china girl".............no chart action

first album away from The Stooges...
all tracks bar one written or co written with Mr. Bowie....
you might recognise one track from the tracklist, China Girl, Bowie covered
his own song on the 1983 album "lets dance" and had a huge hit himself with it...
songs on here are very Bowie sounding and Iggy's voice is very similar to Bowies
throughout this one, and the other one of his I own (lust for life), which is in line to be
posted over the next few days...
album took a while to get used to, but once it did I loved it....

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

"mansize rooster".......#20 UK..#131 AU
"lose it".....................#75 UK
"lenny"......................#10 UK
"alright" b/w "time"......#2 UK

debut set from this Britpop group....
so, Britpop, sort of a bridging sound between Oasis and Blur,
especially on the first two albums....
never reached the heights of those two but had their dedicated following nonetheless...
a superb debut set, better than the debuts of the fore mentioned bands but couldn't sustain it...
strange that the biggest selling single off the album was a double-a side single, and one of the tracks
is my favourite off the album, the other is the worst IMO....
their best album also, but only just beating the follow up which is in line to post later in the week...

I LOVE THIS ALBUM
