from Virginia
13 albums and I've never heard of them
but I have now
I get a Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr sound on the music
and a Jonathan Richman for the vocal
said to be a totally different sound from previous work
a few good tracks but with 12 of them clocking in at 70 minutes, a bit much

SUNFLOWER BEAN "human ceremony"

Spotify listen:

appears in one of those "best of " lists...
NYC alt rock/indi rock band...
female vocals on most tracks, a duet between band members also...
sound varies, almost psychedelic in places, mellow in others,
a bit of a Byrds 'jingle jangle' guitar sound in others...
female vocals irk me on at least half the tracks but im not sure why...
the only track I really liked on that Spotify listen, the duet:

TANCRED "out of the garden"

Spotify listen:

another from those "best of lists" of 2016,
and another with a female vocalist,
alt rock here, post grunge is probably more apt...
hearing The Pixies throughout...
lyrics are simplistic similar to those of Avril Lavigne...
but overall a nice sound...
heres one of the singles from it:

THE AVALANCHES "since I left you" cd, 2000

career stats:
studio albums.......2
singles.................7

this album...................#21 AU...#8 UK...#9 IRE
singles:
"electricity"..................no chart action
"frontier psychiatrist"....#49 AU...#18 UK
"since I left you"..........#17 AU...#16 UK
"radio"........................no chart action
"a different feeling"......no chart action

debut set from this Aussie dj/producer duo...
bought it on the back of purchasing their latest album "wildflower" which I liked a lot
except for that stupid "Frankie Sinatra" track....
so, lots of samples throughout this one, Wiki says theres an estimates 3,500 on there...
this one sounds a lot like the material Moby was doing on his "play" album from the late 1990s...
love the title track on this one and like everything else bar one track...
will be interesting how the latest one stacks up against this one when it comes out of the "to play" pile...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: tonight
best track: since I left you

I haven't liked much of what I have heard from The Avalanches.

Interesting that you compare it to Moby. He uses samples extensively, yet to me they do not seem to overwhelm the music. I think the difference is that Moby uses samples in the service of music, while The Avalanches are almost the other way around.
