Artist names and their changes:
#1
ok, so with the advent of bob_32 mentioning that Maroon 5 were originally called Kara's Flowers I thought a good thread starter would be to
get members here to post the original names of bands/solo artists just like bob_32 did in another thread.

the rules for the thread are simple:

1...give us the name we all know the artist/band by and the names they were formally known by or rejected for one reason or another.

2...if you know why, please also give the history behind the names behind the artist/band.

(if anyone can think of anymore rules for the thread feel free to edit this post and add a rule that may illicit more information etc:

i'll start the thread off with a fairly simple one:

THE JAM (not a name change as such but how Paul Weller chose the name in the first place)

so, young fourteen year old Weller have got his band together, they had started playing in "workingman clubs" around Surrey England,
and they hadn't got a name yet,
Weller was sitting round the table eating breakfast with his sister and parents and was trying to think of a name for the band when his sister
who was buttering toast said "we've had bands called Marmalade and Bread so how about Jam", and the rest is history!

OK, here's some examples of bands that are much better known by other (later) names. Who are these people?

1. The Blue Velvets
- Clue: also known as The Golliwogs
- Ans: Creedence Clearwater Revival

2. The Pendletones
- Ans: The Beach Boys

3. Farm
- Clue: Iconic Australian band
- Ans: Midnight Oil

4. Tom & Jerry
- Ans: Simon & Garfunkel

5. Crush
- Clue: Australian, from around the turn of the millenium
- Ans: Savage Garden

6. The Four Lovers
- Clue: The Four... (something else)
- Ans: The Four Seasons

7. The Four Aims
- Clue: The Four... (something else)
- Ans: The Four Tops

8. The Mullanes
- Ans: Crowded House

9. Flowers (not to be confused with Kara's Flowers)
- Ans: Icehouse

10. The Teenagers (There have been a number of groups with this name, but these guys became far better known under a moniker they adopted later)
- Clue: Under their charismatic lead singer, they became identified with a whole musical genre, bringing that genre to a world wide audience.
- Ans: The Wailers

All will be revealed in a day or so, if no one manages to guess them, after which we can discuss them - reasons for the change, etc.

Correct! For a bonus point, do you know which one was Tom and which was Jerry?

since I have a 50% chance of being right
I'll go with Tom = Art

^^ That's correct. Art used to nickname himself "Tom Graph" because he liked maths.

There is a clue in the song "The Only Living Boy In New York", written of course by Simon, in the line "Tom, get your plane right on time".

The Mullanes were Finn borthers/Crowded House weren't they?

Flowers became Icehouse due to another band in either UK/US already with that name I think?

I vaguely remember something about REM having another name and Crush rings a bell for some reason?
