What Are You Listening To?
[Image: 220px-The_Black_Keys_-_Thickfreakness.jpg]

THE BLACK KEYS "thckfreakness" cd, 2003

career stats:
studio albums...............8
singles........................20

this album....................#9 AU...#182 UK
singles:
"set you free"................no chart action
"hard row"................................#86 UK
"have love, will travel"...............#77 UK

The Keys' third album....
yest to really make their mark on the charts...
strange this made top10 in Australia yet ailed to chart in their homeland??...
had no idea the band was actually a duo until I Wiki'd this album...
very blues rock sound on the album, almost heavy at times....
nothing overly catchy on here like on their "el camino" album,
you know the one, the one that contained "gold on the ceiling" and "lonely boy"...
bought that one first, love it, bought "the name of the album is - brothers" next, which I also liked a lot,
and followed up with this one, which is okay, had I have bought this one first I may not have gone back for seconds...
all up, not a bad album, a bit too much of a muchness in the sound though...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

John Paul White – Beulah

His first solo record since The Civil Wars split up, and a mighty fine offering it is, IMHO. I’m not sure exactly where it fits, it’s a collection of what appear to be quite swampy, folk oriented/alt country songs (I think!). I can wallow in a bit of southern gothic every now and then.

He didn’t write the songs from a place of pain, apparently, which one might be forgiven for thinking, but perhaps that just took a while to surface. This man has a wonderful voice and I like his songwriting. The album seems to be well produced too, which is not surprising as he’s the co-owner of Single Lock Records.

His explanation of the new album title …

Beulah is also a White family nickname. “It’s a term of endearment around our house,” White explains, “like you would call someone ‘Honey.’ My dad used to call my little sister Beulah, and I call my daughter Beulah. It’s something I’ve always been around.”

Beulah is also something much loftier. For the poet and painter William Blake, Beulah was a place deep in the collective spiritual unconscious.

“I won’t pretend to be the smartest guy in the world,” says White, “but I dig a lot of what he’s written. Beulah was a place you could go in your dreams. You could go there in meditation, to relax and heal and center yourself. It wasn’t a place you could stay, but you came back to the world in a better state.”

my copy is the reissue which says featuring Gary Numan
was reissued after the success of the follow up of Replica
I probably went back and picked this up after that
not sure if I liked it then but I don't like it now
reminds me of early Bowie meets Devo
heavy on the electronics on most tracks
