PHOENIX AGAIN - Friends of Spirit
From the obscure annals - an Italian, largely instrumental neo prog/jazz rock band. Highly listenable - this was perfect for today. The core of the band comprises Lorandi family members, brothers and their sons, with Silvano Silva on drums and Andre Piccinelli on keys. Steeped in musicality - very nice. They're called Phoenix Again because they are an incarnation of what was previously Phoenix - they've been recording since 1981. I'll have to go backwards - again!
Two very definite standout tracks for me here ... "Eppur si muore" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYMb1D-GaeY, and the fabulous "Pasión" ... unless I'm very much mistaken, it's Sergio Lorandi's wonderful guitarwork; his influences are Bach, Albeniz, Tarrega, Moreno Torroba, Villa Lobos, Segovia, Castelnuovo Tedesco, Rodrigo & co., - Been listening to this on repeat - it's good and weighty - a bit darker than most of the rest of the album which is fairly easy going, on the whole ...

Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis? And before that Famous Last Words. Listening to the latter inspired by the crisis part of the title and the cover artwork! Chilling out in the midst of chaos seems like a sensible strategy - I like it.
I'm addicted to the key change on "Another Man's Woman" but I think "A Soapbox Opera" takes it today ... the arrangements on this album are just phenomenal ...

^Listening to the former, I mean! Today it's Café del Mar Volume 5 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFfH3g9LxP0 - not entirely sure what to expect but the first track is pretty cool (A.R. Rahman) so hopefully the rest will be too. Chillout - various artists.

The live version of A Soapbox Opera on the 'Paris' album is just amazing.

Jan Schelhaas - Dark Ships
The second of his albums I've listened to - this one popped up as a new release, which I subsequently found out it's actually not - it's a re-release. Anyway - all a bit saccharine for me - I listened because of his association with Camel and Caravan. As a 'sounds like' made me think of Barclay James Harvest but weaker. Some good moments but not enough to hold interest - quite bland I think, which is a shame - it could have been so much more but there are absolutely no surprises and no great joys and delights. The title and lead track is probably the best of the bunch.

WARREN ZEVON "stand in the fire" cd 1980.
i own four studio and this live set...
was torn between this one and "the envoy" today,
i obviously chose this because if i'd have chosen "the envoy" i would be posting it now!...
good solid live set from the very underrated Mr Zevon
thought i'd post this one on this occasion:
I went home with the waitress, the way I always do
How was I to know, she was with the Russians, too?
I was gambling in Havana, I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money, dad, get me out of this.
I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck between the rock and a hard place
And I'm down on my luck, yes I'm down on my luck
Well I'm down on my luck.
All right, send lawyers, guns and money
Send lawyers, guns and money
Send lawyers, guns and money
Send lawyers, guns and money
Yeah, yeah, yeah
