JOY DIVISION "closer" vinyl 1980
a recent aquisition.
the remastered 180g 40th anniversary vinyl.
had never heard the album in its entirity before but knew at least half the tracks.
post-punk is what they call this.
recorded in March 1980, Ian Curtis killed himself just weeks prior to its release...
started off in a really happy mood when the album started but by time it was over i was feeling sombre...
i guess Ian Curtis' state of mind/mood really shone through on here without me realising...
and any album that evokes such feelings and passion has done its job IMO
and for that reason alone....
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

This one probably should go in a 'Folk' thread, but I saw that Lana Del Ray is a topic in this subforum so I gave up looking.
Found on the "Longmire" Netflix series.... by my sweetie again, he's as much of a music nut as I am. So the scene is that Henry is dying from sunstroke in the middle of a Wyoming desert and Sheriff Walt finally finds his best friend. But in the middle of trying to get Henry to a hospital Walt gets bitten on the hand by a rattlesnake. Soooo this song.... Season 6 Episode 1 @ 56:04 :-)
Serious now......
Carry me home when the light in my eyes does fade
Carry me home when the shadow comes to take me away
Lay down my bones knowing I'll be in a better place
Release my soul, carry me home
Carry me home, there's no sorrow down in the ground
Carry me home, don't you weep for I am freedom bound
Lay down my bones, there is peace within the light I've found
Release my soul, carry me home
...
Quietly I feel your whisper settle on me, quietly I'm carried on
Quietly I feel your whisper settle on me, quietly you let me go.....
Don't look back
Keep on track to break the curse
Take the chance
Design your universe

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS "your funeral......my trial" cd, 1986
their fourth.
typical Cave sounds but....
this one just doesnt gel with me nor for me....
something about it doesnt work (and im a big fan)...
one of only three or four that disappoint...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
favourite (which i love, and up there with his greatest IMO)
And no-one saw the Carny go, the weeks flew by
Until they moved on the show, leaving his caravan behind
It was parked out on the south east ridge
And as the company crossed the bridge
With the first rain filling the bone-dry river bed
It shone, just so, upon the edge
Away, away, we're sad to say
Dog-boy, Atlas, Mandrake, the geeks, the hired hands
There was not one among them that did not cast an eye behind
In the hope that the Carny would return to his own kind
The Carny left behind a horse so skin and bone that he named Sorrow
And it was in a shallow, unmarked grave
That that old nag was laid
In the then parched meadow
And it was the dwarves that were given the task of digging the ditch
And laying the nag's carcass in the ground
While boss Bellini, waved his smoking pistol around
saying "The nag was dead meat"
"We can't afford to carry dead weight"
While the whole company standing about, not making a sound
And turning to the dwarves perched on the enclosure gate
The boss says "Bury this lump of crow bait"
And the rain came hammering down
Everybody running for their wagons
Tying all the canvas flaps down
The mangy cats growling in their cages
The bird-girl flapping and squawking around
The whole valley reeking of wet beast
Wet beast and rotten, sodden hay
Freak and brute creation all
Packed up and on their way
The three dwarves peering from their wagon's hind
Moses says to Noah "Shoulda dugga deepa one"
Their grizzled faces like dying moons
Still dirty from the digging done
And Charlie the Atlas to the three said
"I guess the Carny ain't gonna show"
And they were silent for a spell
wishing they'd done a better job of burying Sorrow
And the company passed from the valley
Into a higher ground
And the rain beat on the ridge and on the meadow
And on the mound
Until nothing was left, nothing left at all
Except the body of Sorrow
That rose in time
To float upon the surface of the eaten soil
And a murder of crows did circle 'round
First one, then the others flapping blackly down
And the Carny's van still sat upon the edge
Tilting slowly as the firm ground turned to sludge
And the rain it hammered down
And the rain it hammered down
And the rain it hammered down
And the rain it hammered down
And no-one saw the Carny go
No-one saw the Carny go
No-one saw the Carny go
I say, it's funny how things go...

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS "the first born is dead" cd, 1985.
their second of seventeen...
been playing this non-stop in the car for the last two days...
the lead off track "tupelo" is a Presley tribute (of sorts?!), it compares the birth of Elvis to "the second coming".
the title of the album also refers to the death of Elvis' twin brother Jesse Garon who died at birth.
the album as a whole reflects the then infatuation Cave had with all things from the Southern States of the US...
one song "blind lemon jefferson" is a story about (or tribute to), the old '30s bluesman of the same name...
there is even a cover of Johnny Cash's "wanted man" written by Bob Dylan, Dylan even gave Cave permission to change /add to the existing lyrics, ( i guess he knew/saw the potential of Cave back then maybe??)...
all up an excellent album,
seven tracks, five i love, two i like.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
so many great tracks on here
so difficult to pick one above the others but heres one that i love:
Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm
I am the black crow king
Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm
I am the black crow king
Keeper of the nodding corn
Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!
All the hammers are a-talking
All the nails are a-singing
So sweet and low
You can hear it in the valley
Where live the lame and the blind
They climb the hill out of its belly
They leave with mean black boots on
"I just made a simple gesture
They jumped up and nailed it to my shadow
My gesture was a hooker
You know, my shadow's made of timber."
And the storm is a-rolling
And the storm is a-rolling
All down on me
And I'm still here rolling after everybody's gone
And I'm still here rolling after everybody's gone
Ah'm still here rolling and I'm left on my own
The blackbirds have all gone!
Everyone's rolled on!
I am the black crow king
Keeper of the trodden corn
I am the king
Won't say it again
And the rain, it raineth daily
Lord
And wash away my clothes
I surrender up my arms
To a company of crows
I am the black crow king
I won't say it again
And all the thorns are a-crowning
King ruby on each spine
And the spears are a-sailing
O my o my
And the storm is a-rolling
And the storm is a-rolling
All down on me
And I'm still here rolling after everybody's gone
And I'm still here rolling after everybody's gone
I'm still here rolling and left on my own
Those blackbirds they have all flown and
I am on my own
I am the black crow king
Keeper of the forgotten corn
The King! The King!
I'm the king of nuthin' at all
The hammers are a-talking
The nails are a-singing
The thorns are a-crowning him
The spears are a-sailing
The crows are a-mocking
The corn is a-nodding
The storm is a-rolling
The storm is a-rolling
The storm is a-rolling down
The storm is a-rolling down

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS "skeleton key" cd, 2016
their sixteenth of seventeen...
Eureka!
yup, just had one of those eureka moments where everything clicks in to place!.
what a masterful album!
album was recorded just two weeks after his son died accidently in a cliff fall...
music is very sparse, lyrics are full of emotive imagery (though not directly about his son), which certainly took Cave to a deeper, darker more sombre place than on previous albums.
like Lennon's "plastic ono band" this hard to listen to becuase it is so raw, cuts to the bone type feel, and like Lennon, Cave has harnessed all the raw pent up anguish to deliver something truly brilliant IMO.
would almost certainly rate in my top 5 albums of his career for me.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
the single:
You fell from the sky
Crash landed in a field
Near the river Adur
Flowers spring from the ground
Lambs burst from the wombs of their mothers
In a hole beneath the bridge
You convalesced, you fashioned masks of twigs and clay
You cried beneath the dripping trees
Ghost song lodged in the throat of a mermaid
With my voice
I am calling you
You're a young man waking
Covered in blood that is not yours
You're a woman in a yellow dress
Surrounded by a charm of hummingbirds
You're a young girl full of forbidden energy
Flickering in the gloom
You're a drug addict lying on your back
In a Tijuana hotel room
With my voice
I am calling you
With my voice
I am calling you
You're an African doctor harvesting tear ducts
You believe in God, but you get no special dispensation for this belief now
You're an old man sitting by the fire, you're the mist rolling off the sea
You're a distant memory in the mind of your creator, don't you see?
With my voice
I am calling you
With my voice
I am calling you
Let us sit together until the moment comes
With my voice
I am calling you
Let us sit together in the dark until the moment comes

NEIL FINN "try whistling this" cd, 1998
his debut solo album...
lots of Crowded House elements vocally.
the start of his self analysis of his Catholicism upbringing in lyrics and music...
an excellent album and refreshing to hear Finn again...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
the first single:
See it anyone got my eyes got my face
Sing it everyone got my nose got my blood
Conscience plays upon me now
Safe until my luck runs out
Cukoos call, pendulum swings
I thought you knew everything
Lift my hands, make the cross.
Sinner, I have never learned
Beginner, I cannot return
Forever, I must walk this earth like some forgotten soldier.
These things, I should keep to myself
But I feel somehow strangely compelled
Under moonlight, I stood wild and naked
Felt no shame just my spirit awakened.
Sinner
Seein everything
Got my eyes got my face
Fireball drop from the sky
All my dreams have come to pass
Where's my faith, is it lost
Can't see it 'til you cast it off.
Sinner, there is no such thing
Beginner, I have learned to sing
Forever, I must walk this earth like some forgotten soldier.
Today, I am still disconnected
To the face that I saw in the clouds
And the closest I get to contentment
Is when all of the barriers come down.
These things I should keep to myself
But I feel somehow strangely compelled
And the closest I get to contentment
Is when all of the barriers come down.
Sinner
Sinner
Got my eyes, got my face
Seein anyone
Got my nose, got my blood
(I must walk this earth)
Seein anyone
Got my eyes, got my face

DEXY'S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS "too-rye-ay" cd/vinyl 1982
a number of genres on here from cleltic folk, folk, pop, rock, r+b, you name it....
so much more to them than the mega-hit Come On Eileen...
an excellent album from the get-go...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM.
fave on this listen:
I'll need tonight to sit and think about this
Think what to do.
I'll take some strength to banish hollow sorrow.
Hollow sorrow's nothing new.
Just enough strength to last until tomorrow
Until I believe in my soul.
Tonight I lost sight of all purpose
Despite all this trickery you told me was right.
I was such a good boy I let you hold the door
So kind, so nice, where's my prize?
(That's all there ever is) Oh yeah yeah yeah?
(That's all there ever was) Ah you must be fucking joking.
(The same for everyone) Oh yes. Yes yes.
Would you repeat that. Break it to me gently,
Stand over there.
Oh I know I was an arrogant boy but I let you hold the door
Oh I was kind. I was nice, where's the prize?
And I'm on the train from New Street
To Euston. I'm going out to Harrow again
And I'm trying to get the feeling
That I had in nineteen seventy two.
Oh but you're going too fast for me here,
I'm saying, wait a minute there, wait a minute there
Hold it, stop! Let me get this clear
(That's all there ever is) oh yeah yeah yeah?
(The same for everyone) Oh yes. yes. yes.
You see I know what this is, I know
What's going on here, this is just the difference between
It's the battle between the body and the soul. The spirit
And what's needed here
What I intend to do now is I'm going to punish my body.
I'll punish the body to believe in the soul, I will punish
my body, until I believe in my soul

THE SMITHS "the world wont listen" cd, 1987
their second compilation...
a good solid collection of singles including their respective b-sides which by the way, were pretty good also...
nothing i dont like on here but three or four i love....
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
we'll go for this one on this occasion:
The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred, there lies
A murderous desire for love.
How can they look into my eyes
And still they don't believe me?
How can they hear me say those words
Still they don't believe me?
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever believe me?
And if they don't believe me now
Will they ever, they ever believe me?.
The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A plundering desire for love.
How can they see the love in our eyes
And still they don't believe us?
And after all this time
They don't want to believe us
And if they don't believe us now
Will they ever believe us?
And when you want to live
How do you start?
Where do you go?
Who do you need to know?
