What Are You Listening To?

DO-RE-MI  "domestic harmony"  vinyl, 1985

Aussie band, debut of only two...
some songs dont even have choruses, just verse....
overall feel of the album is similar to 'psycho killer' (ie with the heavy bass and percussion/drums)..
vocalist Deborah Conway has one of the best voices around IMO, or did back then anyway...
excellent album that covers some dark subject matter considering it was the era of Duran Duran, Wham, MJ etc...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

the controversial single:  Do Re Mi - Man Overboard (official video) - YouTube

my favourite:

That dog is vicious with a smile on his face
Can be rough-shod and mobile or well-bred as lace
And Peter's crying wolf, this week he's eating from the streets
With one shoe on, with one shoe off, he's crawling on his feet
Now there's warnings' moving clockwise in my direction
Wake up yawning just in time to cushion the blow
There's a buzz alarm at sunrise, it wants my attention
But my legs are pins and needles and my fingers are slow, too slow

Changed my religion and I look to the east
And I check my local papers for the mark of the beast
It's the trumpets above me that disturb me the least
'Til my logical thinking is illogically ceased
Now there's warnings' moving clockwise in my direction
Wake up yawning just in time to cushion the blow
There's a buzz alarm at sunrise, it wants my attention
But my legs are pins and needles and my fingers are slow, too slow

My friend is happy, she moves to the breeze
And she devotes her energies to saving the trees
While I think of people dying on their knees
While we're two of the millions more ignoring their pleas
While there's warnings moving clockwise in my direction
Wake up yawning just in time to cushion the blow
There's a buzz alarm at sunrise, it wants my attention
But my legs are pins and needles and my fingers are slow, too slow (Too slow)

My hands are steady and I look to the skies
And I ask for a messenger who never replies
I see jets over Jordan and tears in the eyes
Of a people who weather while society lies
Now there's warnings' moving clockwise in my direction
Wake up yawning just in time to cushion the blow
There's a buzz alarm at sunrise, it wants my attention
But my legs are pins and needles and my fingers are slow

RED WANTING BLUE  "from the vanishing point"  cd,  2012

from Columbus Ohio...
alt-rock band...
eighth album of ten by the looks of it...
vocals have the same quality as Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell combined...
music has the same quality as Cornell, and the softer side of Pearl Jam...
this one just gets better with each listen and never fails to impress me with its straightforward approach to rock music...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite: (one of the albums quieter moments)

Stay the same
Oh, don't change a thing
'Cause this feeling I got, I don't want it to stop
You've got me reeling, here
For my breathing
My heaviest high
There are scars behind these eyes of mine
Wishing your healing would come
So let go of me
Let your drunken arms swing free
'Cause I've got the wheel and I'm not letting go

You're like cocaine
I take you in till I go numb
Cocaine
And I'll never say enough's enough

Oh, I'm feeling for your attention, my sweet
And if being alone's a disease, then I guess you're the cure
Honey, we ain't saints
Oh, let's face it, we're sinners
And this world ain't easy on beginners when it comes to love
So push me
Sometimes I need a shove
'Cause I'm way too scared to ever let go of your love

You're like cocaine
I take you in till I go numb
Cocaine
And I'll never say enough's enough
Cocaine
You do your best to fuck me up
Cocaine
Oh, you, my cocaine

I don't wanna get clean
'Cause I know what that means
It's something I just can't take
You call me an addict
But you don't know what kind of hard habit you are to break

You're like cocaine
You're like cocaine

JACK WHITE  "lazaretto" cd, 2014

my second last album listen for 2021...
Jack's second solo album...
by his often weird standards this is almost normal...
blues/R&B, folky, country but still sounds alternative...
my favourite of all his albums (including the White Stripes)...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

the excellent album closer:

(chorus)
Who is the who, telling who what to do?
Who is the who, telling who what to do?
Who is the who, telling who what to do?

Tell me who, tell me who, tell me who.

Well, Want and Able were crossing the road
Want had a feeling there was something he was owed
But Able broke it to him that there's a social code
So walk straight down the middle now and do what we're told
Walk straight down the middle now and do what we're told.

(repeat chorus)

Want said that didn't feel so good
To never be fulfilled, forever stressed out and impatient
Always saying, "Just over the next hill"
Always saying, "Just over the next hill".

Who is the who, telling who what to do?
Being able is to freedom what wanting is to cruel
It's hard to tell it seems, which one of them's the fool
Is freedom a gift, that we only give to the ones that say "I love you"?.

(repeat chorus)

Now, Want and Able are two different things
One is desire, and the other is the means
Like I wanna hold you, and see you, and feel you in my dreams
But that's not possible, something simply will not let me

STYLE COUNCIL  "confessions of a pop group" cd/cassette, 1988

a revisit...
their fourth and final album at the time (their fifth was rejected by the label at the time)...
hard to know where to put this as it is experimental with its  soulful, poppy, rap/hip-hop, classical, r+b/funky and easy listening sounds.
although i still love this one some of the tracks rating have been reappraised since the initial beginners guide post.
still the most eclectic, adventurous album of Weller's career, only "22 dreams" some two decades later comes close.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite on this occasion, the almost eleven minute 'three piece suite' as it evolves from a piano classical piece through to becoming quite jazzy and eventually pays respect to the Beach Boys, great stuff IMO

suite1:  - "in the beginning":

(instrumental)

suite 2: - "the gardener of Eden":

True I was a gardener, once upon a time.
When the world was young and all the earth was mine
Mine to tend to, to plough and to sow.
Before mankind came and rendered all things low.
And beauty was it's first name by this I would call.
And ready the harvest for one and for all.

The orchards and the wheatfields which could of fed the world,
Were divided up like money and sold through human slaves
The rivers fresh, the hillsides that had no need of name,
Now ran red with the life blood and drunk with guilty shame.

The gentle bough was broken and twisted out of shape,
And who knows the consequences when the bough doth break,
The mother soil which reared it's young, now reared her angry head,
And rain fell down like teardrops upon the flower beds.

The blame for this I'm in no doubt, is mine and mine alone,
But so proud was I of my work, I had to share it's growth -
'Tis true I was a gardener in the time before the flood,
Now these greenfingers of mine - are stained by angels blood.

suite 3: -  "mourning the passing of time":

i'm hanging up my surfboard
i'm given back my ring.
i've had enough of choking on salty sea and fish....

i come to the surface and come to my senses
i come to the surface and come to my senses
i come to the surface and come to my senses.

GOYTE  "making mirrors" cd, 2011.

a revisit after hearing "somebody that i used to know" on the radio yesterday..
his third of three, he never went back for another after the millions of albums sold, 14 million sales of the hit and a Grammy or two...
apparently he didnt enjoy the fame side of success so he went back to his old band The Basics to play pubs and clubs in around Melbourne, Australia, their latest album was released in 2019...
if you havent heard him i would compare his vocal quality to those of Sting and Peter Gabriel as examples...
anyway, the album is in alternative because it covers pop, experimental, electronica, easy listening and soft rock...
a very good album still but the mega-hit is not my favourite now...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite, the Motown tinged pop song:

There was a time I was down, down
I didn't know what to do
I was just stumbling around, around
Thinking things could not improve
I couldn't look on the bright side
Of anything at all
That's when you gave me a call

Now I feel better, better, better than before
I feel better, better, better, now I'm not down any more

And there were times I was sure, so sure
I couldn't turn it around
I couldn't care any more
About the good things I found
That's when you gave me a reason
To make me smile again
I only have to see you and then

I feel better, better, better than before
I feel better, better, better, now I'm not down any more

                 (repeat chorus)

Life sometimes seems to get the best of you
Like everything just brings you down
Just when you think there's nothing you can do
A friendly face will bring you around
And you'll feel better

You'll feel better, you'll feel better,
Better than before
You'll feel better, much better
No you won't get down any more

DAVID BOWIE  "uǝɥʇɐǝɥ"  cd, 2002

a random Bowie pick to play on his death anniversary a couple of days ago...
his 23rd studio album...
experts call it Art Rock/Art Pop, i can live with that...
standout for me is "everyone says hi" but theres plenty of other cool stuff on here including a cover of NY's "ive been waiting for you" (originally off his self titled debut solo album from '68)...
as is typical with David Bowie albums, the more you listen the more layers in the  music are presented in all their glory,
he rarely fails to disappoint me and i find his latter day albums more complex than they are given credit for.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM:

thought i would go for this one on this occasion,
i know he didnt write it but not sure if it is a cover??

Took a trip on a Gemini spacecraft
And I thought about you
I passed through the shadow of Jupiter
(Sigh)
And I thought about you
I shot my spacegun
And boy, I really felt blue.

Two or three flying saucers
Parked under the stars
The winding stream
Moon shining down
On some little town
And with each beam
The same old dream.

I took a trip on a Gemini spacecraft
And I thought about you
Well I shot my spacegun
And I thought about you
Pulled down my sun visor
Boy, I really felt blue.

You jumped into your Gemini
I jumped into mine
We'll orbit the Moon
For just one time
Tomorrow night
Tomorrow night
Will you hold hands
With me under the moonlight.

Took a trip in a Gemini spacecraft
And I thought about you
I shot my spacegun
And I thought about you
I took, I took a walk in space
Boy, I really felt blue.

Well I peeked through the crack
And I looked way back
The stardust trail
Leading back to you
What did I do
What could I do
What did I do
Well
I thought about you
I thought about you
Took a trip on a Gemini spacecraft
And thought about you
