[Image: 220px-Grateful_Dead_-_American_Beauty.jpg]

GRATEFUL DEAD  "american beauty" cd, 1970

only thing i own and the only thing i care for by them...
almost complete folky sound here...
hearing Dylan and CSN as definite influences...
excellent album and worth a listen if you havent already done so...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite:

Look out of any window
Any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
Birds are winging or rain is falling from a heavy sky

What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon, long ago

Walk out of any doorway
Feel your way, feel your way like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
Around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you

What do you want me to do
To watch for you while you are sleeping?
Then please don't be surprised
When you find me dreaming, too

Look into any eyes you find by you
You can see clear through to another day
Maybe it's been seen before through other eyes
On other days while going home

What do you want me to do
To do for you, to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon, long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear

What do you want me to do
To do for you, to see you through?
A box of rain will ease the pain
And love will see you through

Just a box of rain, wind, and water
Believe it if you need it, if you don't, just pass it on
Sun and shower, wind and rain
In and out the window like a moth before a flame

And it's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
Or leave it if you dare
And it's just a box of rain
Or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
And a short time to be there

BOB DYLAN  "another side of...."  cd,  1964

his fourth of thirty-nine...
still all folk, just Bob with guitar and harmonica...
first real album of his that is what i would call 'classic Dylan'...
excellent lyrics throughout, some of which are still relevant today...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite (and one of his best IMO)

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rolling high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Girl's faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

A self-ordained professor's tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
"Equality," I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

NEIL YOUNG  "prairie wind" cd, 2005

his 26th solo studio album of 41...
Uncle Neil is contemplating his own mortality on this one, along with reminiscing days long passed...
not surprising really considering just months before writing and recording this one he suffered a near fatal aneurysm...
album's tracks are firmly in the folky style we all know and love from him, was written and recorded in Nashville using a lot of the same musos he used on "harvest" and "harvest moon"...
album contains the most complete set of lyrics featured on any of his albums and is the equal best in terms of melodies and vocals  of his best works also...
an absolute masterpiece IMO and overall, my second favourite studio album of his...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

favourite on this occasion: clip taken from the excellent "heart of gold" dvd.

In the morning when I wake up and listen to the sound
Of the birds outside on the roof
I try to ignore what the paper says
And I try not to read all the news
And I'll hold you if you had a bad dream
And I hope it never comes true
'Cause you and I been through so many things together
And the sun starts climbing the roof

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

The Red River stills flows through my home town
Rollin' and tumblin' on its way
Swirling around the old bridge pylons
Where a boy fishes the morning away
His bicycle leans on an oak tree
While the cars rumble over his head
An aeroplane leaves a trail in an empty blue sky
And the young birds call out to be fed

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

An old man walks along on the sidewalk
Sunglasses and an old Stetson hat
The four winds blow the back of his overcoat away
As he stops with the policeman to chat
And a train rolls out of the station
That was really somethin' in its day
Picking up speed on the straight prairie rails
As it carries the passengers away

It's gone
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
Only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

fave:

Narrowly, I escaped inevitable utter
And total ruin, though not left unscathed
My name and face kept intact by benevolent cowardice
We wore our Sunday best encircled your chrysalis
But you slept through the crisis

You will take a breath, you'll take your very first breath
You'll take a breath, once you've inhaled water
May you have a good death, a very good death

As the dust's settling, I'm tip-toeing my way
Back to controlled environs the smug and relief
When a voice stops me in my tracks
And laughter bounds from the wreckage
We came out Easter dressed, now how could you second guess
A well-timed metamorphosis

You will learn to laugh, you'll get a belly-aching laugh
You'll learn to laugh once you've finished crying
May you have a good death, a very good death

Throw the baby out with the bath
Stones in a house of glass, lean into the cracks
And let the sky fall in

All I would die for replaced by virtual, immaculate imitation

My tryptophan teeth

And comatose lips firmly latched 'round the teat of a comfort

Whore, we waited all night long for you at rock bottom

Consoling your swan song

You will get a kiss, you'll get your very first kiss

You'll get a kiss once you've endured falling

May you have a good death, a very good death

Throw the baby out with the bath

Stones in a house of glass, lean into the cracks

Stones in a house of glass, lean into the cracks

Stones in a house of glass, lean into the cracks

Stones in a house of glass, lean into the cracks
And let the sky fall in
