What Are You Listening To?

ROD STEWART  "tonight im yours" cd/vinyl  1981

from the cd box set
his eleventh studio album, sixth from the set....
first vinyl of his i purchased and had fond memories of the album even though i hadnt played it in a long while...
three covers on here and seven self penned tunes, so back to being "the worlds greatest covers artist" once again!...
album is full of rock numbers, a couple of slow tunes and a little soft rock thrown in...
not anywhere near as good as i remembered it which was a let down for me,
and i fear worse is yet to come from the next couple of albums also....
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

1.   tonight im yours  ***
2.   how long  **
3.   tora! tora! tora! (out with the boys)  *
4.   tear it up  *
5.   only a boy  *
6.   just like a woman  **
7.   jealous  *
8.   sonny  *
9.   young turks  ***
10. never give up on a dream  *

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN  "high hopes" cd, 2014

his eighteenth studio album....
never purchased it the year it was released becuase i didnt like it but found it at a second-hand fair last Sunday morning for $2 so i purchased it then,...
several tracks not even written by The Boss, a few others are duets with Tom Morello (he even sings lead vocal on one track, a cover of "the ghost of tom joad"), and plays lead guitar throughout...
with such a huge influence of Morello the album really doesnt sound like a Springsteen album in places and the tracks that do just sound very average to me but not going to knock him too much because he is The Boss.
so with this one included there are only two, maybe three albums of his that i do not like...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

best track. (his response to NYC cops shooting a young boy 41 times as he was reaching for his I.D in his wallet)

True - I like all versions of this song that I have heard over the years.

BTW that Roxy Music album that it is taken from - The High Road - is one of the most improvised live recordings I have ever heard. A real spontaneous live album.

The delight that is Camel's music inspired by The Snow Goose. Nothing quite like it. A magical congruence at a moment in time - made in the heady days of burgeoning creativity when the world was their oyster and a moral stance was a fine thing. There's a strange purity about this album - it's a masterpiece IMHO, whether Paul Gallico thought so or not. I cannot imagine anyone else capturing the essence of that story in notes, as they did. Love it.

Shouldn't really separate the tracks - they need to run into one another, but nonetheless here goes! ...

ROD STEWART  "body wishes"  vinyl/cd  1983

from the studio albums box set...
his twelfth studio album...
only the second album of his career where there are no covers (Rod wrote or co-wrote every track!)...
after the bad "tonight im yours" album review i was dreading this one because back in the day i loved the other one but wasnt overly impressed with this one, but oh how times change.....
i really enjoyed this one on this occasion, even the horrible 80s synth-drums and production didnt dent my enjoyment...
eight rockers or soft rockers here and two ballad type slower tunes...
weakest track for me is the closer which he co-wrote with Bernie Taupin....
all up though....
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

1:   dancin' alone  **
2:   baby jane  ***
3:   move me  **
4:   body wishes  ***
5:   sweet surrender  ***
6:   what am i gonna do?  **
7:   ghetto blaster  **
8:   ready now  **
9:   strangers again  **
10: satisfied  *

The very first Camel album I ever heard - and bought straight afterwards. A unique piece of work. I have the newer version as well but the original is just better.

ROD STEWART  "camouflage"  cassette/cd  1984

from the albums box set,
his thirteenth...
purchased on cassette back in the day to listen to when i rollerskated while using my walkman (damn, just realised im getting old!)...
never really cared for the album but it was good uptempo stuff to skate to...
Rod's vocals on these songs are pretty good but its full of synths and horrid '80s production...
eight track on here, three of which are covers and only one ballad which it the final track...
the covers are Free's "all right now", Persuaders' "some guys have all the luck" and Todd Rundgren's "can we still be friends", all of which are decent enough versions which suit his vocals IMO...
overall it fares better than i remember it and does manage to scrape through....
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
