What Are You Listening To?
JonG Wrote:Also #9 on Time magazine's best of 2009 list. Not that we're keeping score or anything, but I believe I posted that before the recommendation from Ed. :biggrin1:

But I'm not familiar with it either way...

Apologies for the ommission, Jon. I don't pay much attention to these lists at this time of the year, so I'd missed your post.

One of those rare finds for me. I know they've been around for awhile (2001), but they are new to me. This is the 4th full length album from this Oregon band. They have one since then which tiggi has highly recomended. Based on this one, I'll have to check it out. The title track of this album is based on a Japanese folk tale about a man who marries a woman who is actually a (what else, a crane). The bird, not the lifting thing. I'll spare you and my fingers the details. I have no idea why the sequencing has #3 at the beginning and #1 & 2 later. The story would dictate those be in order. Makes no sense. The 12+ minute The Island is based on Shakespeares The Tempest and is broken into 3 parts of which only the last 2 are included in the clip. Other songs are based on real life historical events, which makes it all the more interesting for me. Pretty morbid subject matter throughout which makes for good music. The album reached #35 in the U.S.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Summersong

Best Track - The Perfect Crime #2

Sing, muse, of the passion of the pistol
Sing, muse, of the warning by the whistle
On a night so dark in the waning
A dawn obscured by slate sky raining

Five and twenty burglars by the reservoir
A teenage lookout on the signal tower
The mogul's daughter in hogtie
The mogul fingers the wrong guy, all lies

It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime
It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime

The bagman's quaking at the fingers
The hand-off glance a little lingers
A well-dressed man in the crosshairs
A shot rings out from somewhere upstairs

It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the
perfect crime
It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the
perfect crime

It was the perfect crime

It was like a ticker-tape parade
When the plastique on the safe was blown away
And we all gazed from eye to eye
As we mouthed our silent goodbyes

The valley's sleeping like a bastard
It stinks of slumber and disaster
Two words are spoken on the tap wire
The agent's ploy finds a surefire backfire

It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the
perfect crime
It was a perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect, the perfect crime

One of my favourite bands.

Their music is basically '60s stuff given some severe twists, and a muscular & unique sound. Roaring guitars, enigmatic lyrics, & surfer harmonies combine to winning effect.

This is a blast from start to finish...

After breaking from a major label with one of those pesky contract disputes, these Ohio boys offer their second album at rockproper.com, and it's a pretty good effort. You can listen to each song or download the entire album for free. Other indie bands are available there also.

A band who have much in common with Flaming Lips IMHO:

- A penchant for over-crowded stages
- A strong similarity musically
- A love of kitchen-sink record production

This is a swaggering Alt-Rock album, and mine has a complementary DVD of the making of this complex album, which we watched...
