What Are You Listening To?
Renaissance. I know Annie Haslam's voice but for some reason, never really listened to the Renaissance albums. I'm on the third now, and I went backwards. Quite normal for me! LOL! Starting with Grandine il vento or Symphony of Light as it is latterly known.

I liked it but as I listened couldn't help thinking that it really was just a vehicle for that voice, which despite its five octave range, became a leeetle wearying after a while. She was 67 when the album was recorded (only two of them from the original line-up) and the difference between the earlier albums I went back to, and this, is marked. She still has it, make no error but there's an effortlessness (is that a word? It looks weird suddenly??) in 1973's Ashes are Burning, and 1975's Scheherazade and other Stories whereas in 2014 she sometimes seems to have a harsher tone. Also, her own lyrics are not up to the same standard as those of Betty Thatcher who wrote most of the lyrics for the band in the beginning. And then there was the band as a whole - it was a much more complete sound. Hmmm - I will probably try out a few more, I think ...

Incidentally - Ms Haslam also paints and this is her cover art - "Immortal Beloved" from Symphony of Light ...

"Ocean Gypsy" from Scheherazade ...

Shawn Phillips - Bright White

What an absolutely astonishing voice - never fails to elicit the utmost awe. Today, I really think I'd cope if I was destined to hear nothing but his music for the rest of my life ...

ERIC CLAPTON  "461 ocean boulevard"  cd, 1974

a revisit...
his second solo album of twenty-one...
often regarded as his greatest achievement by the experts and 'best of' lists...
i do not hold this in such high esteem though...
i think there are three great tracks on it, several good ones and several that make me yawn...
i guess it was one of those 'had to be there back in the day' albums to fully appreciate it...
but that said,
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

LIAM GALLAGHER  "c'mon you know"  vinyl, 2022

his third solo outing under his own name...
strange thing is that i found it easier to find the vinyl than the cd for some reason??...
soft rock to rock on here...
hearing lots of influences in the melodies and lyrics...
lead off single was co-written between Gallagher and Dave Grohl and even with Grohl it is the weakest thing on the album for me...
i guess the album wouldnt appeal to non-Gallagher/Oasis fans and i have no hesitation in saying so but im a fan..
not as good as his previous effort but still pretty bloody good IMO and rates an excellent 2.4 which means....
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Today's pick - I am not a fan of the usual Xmas songs that are played non-stop on radio stations. This is the exception.
