THE AVETT BROTHERS  "magpie & the dandelion" cd, 2013

a revisit...
their eighth of ten...
folk, country, bluegrass and Americana...
excellent harmonies, melodies and overall sound quality is just about second to none...
great band whose level of consistency  is first class.

OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN  "if not for you" vinyl, 1971

her debut album...
from the collection my parents gave me a while ago...
UK cover art is basically a close up of her face from that image, i prefer the cover shown though...
a decent enough album considering im not really a fan of hers..
album came in higher than i thought it would but still a mixed bag as expected...

ELVIS PRESLEY  "elvis: the Sun sessions" vinyl, 1976.

a compilation of sixteen songs recorded by Presley at Sun Records circa 1954-55...
mainly country and rockabilly tunes...
theres still a dozen or so tracks he recorded that arent included here but these are the best ones IMO...
some of these tracks really show the talent that was yet to be unleashed upon the world of music and as much as i dislike Tom Parker and the way he manipulated Presley, without him, there would be no Elvis Presley as i dont think Sam Phillips would have had the means or capabilities to take him to the world...
this literally is 'the roots of rock and roll' and yes it is debatable what may or may not have happened without Presley but the fact remains that he was an integral part to start of what we call "rock and roll"

NEIL YOUNG  "prairie wind"  cd, 2005

a revist of another classic album IMO...
folky with hints of country...
similar vibe to "harvest moon" and "harvest"...
his second best studio album after "harvest moon" for me...
songs are very reflective as he takes a wander through his memories of living in Canada as a child...
lyrics are some of the best of his career,
such a shame his music has been, for the most part, on a downward spiral since this one...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

In the morning when I wake up and listen to the sound
Of the birds outside on the roof
I try to ignore what the paper says
And I try not to read all the news
And I'll hold you if you had a bad dream
And I hope it never comes true
'Cause you and I been through so many things together
And the sun starts climbing the roof.

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay.

The Red River stills flows through my home town
Rollin' and tumblin' on its way
Swirling around the old bridge pylons
Where a boy fishes the morning away
His bicycle leans on an oak tree
While the cars rumble over his head
An aeroplane leaves a trail in an empty blue sky
And the young birds call out to be fed.

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay.

An old man walks along on the sidewalk
Sunglasses and an old Stetson hat
The four winds blow the back of his overcoat away
As he stops with the policeman to chat
And a train rolls out of the station
That was really somethin' in its day
Picking up speed on the straight prairie rails
As it carries the passengers away.

It's gone
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
Only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

MERLE HAGGARD  "the very best of" cd.

a revisit...
double disk, 48 track career spanning compilation...
only listened to the first disk today but thats okay, i'll get to the other disk over the next few days...
was sort of lukewarm on Haggard a decade ago but his genius as a singer/songwriter grows more and more on me with each passing year...
that doesnt mean i love this album yet but im not far off doing so as this disk scores a border love score of 2.3...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

a revisit...
his 28th solo studio album....
theres nothing i love on this album but plenty to like with a couple of duds thrown in amongst the thirteen tracks...
and at least it is predominantly a country album...

Anyone familiar with Dave Alvin's music? I heard this track a few weeks back and it's one those that keeps coming back unbidden - not really an earworm but shows up now and then. I remember someone telling me about him once but I've never listened to him other than this.
