Formerly Grand Funk Railroad, they had dropped the Railroad by the time of this compilation. Not sure why. Maybe they should have dropped the Funk as there wasn't too much of that. In fact, maybe they should should have dropped the Grand, as they weren't that either. But then they would just be Blank Space and that wouldn't have gone over very well. Band was formed in 1968 in Flint, Michigan and had some decent hits back in the day, but had begun to fizzle by this date and the band had actually split up. Of course that never stops the label from cahing in one last time. These hits are from mid-career and are not their best work to me with the exception of the Todd Rundgren produced We're An American Band and Bad Time. Still an ok album. Their only #1 hits are on here, American Band along with the terrible remake of the Little Eva classic Locomotion.

Worst Track - Sally

Best Track - We're An American Band

Out on the road for forty days
Last night in Little Rock, put me in a haze
Sweet, sweet Connie was doin' her act
She had the whole show and that's a natural fact

Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight

(Chorus)
We're an American band
We're an American band
We're comin' to your town
We'll help you party it down
We're an American band

Four young chiquitas in Omaha
Waitin' for the band to return from the show
A feelin' good, feelin' right and it's Saturday night
The hotel detective, he was outta sight

Now these fine ladies, they had a plan
They was out to meet the boys in the band
They said, "Come on dudes, let's get it on!"
And we proceeded to tear that hotel down

My latest listening is a CDR ( CD acetate ) given to me by the artist.......it contains work from his earliest acetate recordings .....through his series of sixties singles as various forms of the Secrets .........onto his calibration with the Birmingham based band Bronco and on to some alternate versions and out takes of some of his more prominent solo works...............Clifford is one of the great song writers of the sixties/ seventies and yet he is known only to a few. At times his approach and fear of live performance made him his own worst enemy......sadly just after his most successful period, Clifford fell fowl of poor record deals not great contracts and loss of control of the ownership of his music......in addition to this he was diagnosed with MS.... through all this he struggled on making his own quintessentially English music........He died, near penniless and unknown in 2002 . However, his music and memory is kept alive by a faithful few who dream that one day he will gain the recognition he truly deserves Cool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

As much as I mourned the departure of Peter Gabriel, this is a very good album, bordering on great. The first after his leaving and the groups 7th. I guess the decline for me comes later on, and I try and attribute it to Peters loss, but in actuality I think they just tapped out. The group did auditions for a replacement vocalist, but in the end Phil reluctantly took over the chores. This album reached #3 in the U.K. but stalled at #31 in the states. If not for the inclusion of the instrumental Los Endos this would have fallen in the LOVE category.

Worst Track - Los Endos

Best Track - Ripples

Bluegirls come in every size
Some are wise and some otherwise,
They got pretty blue eyes.
For an hour a man may change
For an hour her face looks strange -
Looks strange, looks strange.

Marching to the promised land
Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand,
Pulls you down on your knees,
While you're down a pool appears.
The face in the water looks up,
And she shakes her head as if to say
That it's the last time you'll look like today.

Sail away, away
Ripples never come back.
Gone to the other side.
Sail away, away.

The face that launched a thousand ships
Is sinking fast, that happens you know,
The water gets below.
Seems not very long ago
Lovelier she was than any that I know.

Angels never know it's time
To close the book and gracefully decline,
The song has found a tale.
My, what a jealous pool is she.
The face in the water looks up
She shakes her head as if to say
That the bluegirls have all gone away.

Sail away, away
Ripples never come back.
They've gone to the other side.
Look into the pool,
Ripples never come back,
Dive to the bottom and go to the top
To see where they have gone
Oh, they've gone to the other side...

Sail away, away
Ripples never come back.
They've Gone to the other side.
Look into the pool,
The ripples never come back, come back,
Dive to the bottom and go to the top
To see where they have gone
They've gone to the other side
Ripples never come back
Sail away, away...

Where it all started. After going to Chicago to do the club circuit they were talked into the studio for this first album. With Janis getting most of the vocal chores, they are shared with the guys on some and the guys take over on some. Most of the tracks are originals written by various members. The album reached #60 on the U.S. charts, with the single of Down On Me reaching #43. Two other singles of Coo Coo and The Last Time fared worse than that.

Worst Track - Light Is Faster Than Sound

Best Track - Call On Me

Well, baby, when times are bad,
Now call on me, darling, and I'll come to you.
When you're in trouble and feel so sad,
Well, call on me, darling, come on call on me, and I'll help you.
Yeah!

A man and a woman have each other, baby,
To find their way in this world.
I need you, darling, like the fish needs the sea,
Don't take your sweet, your sweet love from me.

Baby, when you're down and feel so blue,
Well, no, you won't drown, darling, I'll be there too.
You're not alone, I'm there too,
Whatever your troubles, honey, I don't care.

A man and a woman have each other, baby,
To find their way in this world.
I need you, darling, like the fish needs the sea,
Don't take your sweet, sweet love from me!

Please! So baby, when times are bad,
Call on me, darling, just call on me.

Fourth album from this Boston based band, amd not very good for me. Not that much different from their previous efforts, but I think I was getting burnt out with that new wave stuff by this point. The 2 sides of this record should have been labeled good side and bad side as that's how they ranked for me. Too heavy on the synthesizer and the programmed hand claps I think. The album did quite well though, reaching #9 on the U.S. charts with the single of the title track hitting #2. Band members would temporarily split to pusue solo projects after this album.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Maybe Baby

Best Track - Cruiser

big city noise disappears
sucker punch is in your heart
light is reason light is due
my shape is shapeless in your suit

chrome red eyeballs reflect and roll
a simple sun is slowly sinking
roman shoes and pretty hats
glitter bombs that beat the beat

you comb the night 'cause you're a cruiser
and ya you never get enough
when you're cruisin' down the street
and takin' off the heat
when you're on the moonlight run
(cruiser)
(cruiser)

floating jets and big vignettes
get the treatment grab a cab
set aside the screaming fish
tell the world why you're so glad

flip the switches pull the plug
you always wait for better news
you need a hit you need a slu-ug
you don't easily get amused

you comb the night 'cause you're a cruiser
and ya you never get enough
when you're cruisin' down the street
and you're takin' off the heat
when you're on the moonlight run
(cruiser)
well you're a cruiser

As has ben discussed on this forum before...............This is a truly excellent album ...but with the remaster you can hear so much more of the detail. Each instrument is distinct and separate..........you can hear the environment the particular instrument or vocal was recorded in ................nothing is hidden even the background chatter can be heard ....................Even George ? breaking wind at the end of Long Long Long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Cool

I was a big Genesis fan in my teens, and saw them live several times from about 1980.

They always spectacular lighting & stage sets, and Los Endos was always used as a show-stopping piece. Cos of that I've always had a soft spot for it...

Funny old world, innit.
