from my library (vinyl)
English prog rock band formed in 1966 never made much of an impact on these shores. This is their sixth album which doesn't do much for me. A few that pass, more that don't. There's The Rub was better. The sure have had a long life, as I see a string of releases up to 2005. This one did make the charts here at #154. Much better in the U.K. at #22.
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Prelude
Best Track - Mother Of Pearl
Underworld, the queen of pearls
Catches the light that's in your eyes.
She has desires, and has to get higher,
Trying to love the whole world.
Mother of pearl
She's a charity girl,
Giving herself away
To some body and soul.
Paradise if you pay the price
Inlaid with love she satisfies.
She has to pray alone everyday,
Lying in wait for the whole wide world.
Mother of pearl
She's a charity girl,
Giving herself away
To some body and soul.
Black see-through
Dressed to kill and cast her spell,
Sequins of fire for her love's desire,
She's drifting away from her open shell.
Mother of pearl
She's a charity girl,
Giving herself away
To some body and soul.

Had one album by them years ago called 'Pilgrimage' I think. Never bought another. Think they had 3 guitarists at one point or something like that.

"BACK TO THE EGG" WINGS
this album was released in 1979, it was the final Wings album before McCartney went solo again. I like this album and always have done since i first puchased the vinyl version. it was crucified by the media at the time and the record buying public failed to give it the sales it deserved. it reached #6 in the UK and #8 in the USA, a fair result but low for what McCartney had become accustomed to with Wings. Im sure that people were getting used to the mellow McCartney of the previous few years with 'let em in','mull of kintyre','with a little luck', 'silly love songs'etc.Along with 'venus and mars' this is my favourite Wings album.
The album was originally titled 'were open tonight', why the change to 'back to the egg', i dont know. the album was one of the first albums to be advertised on tv in the UK to promote it, the cover is titleless and the bands name also is not on the cover. a documentary promoting the album was also shown on UK tv featuring 9 videos to songs from the album, another unusual thing back in 1979.
two of the songs 'rockestra theme' and 'so glad to see you here' were the heaviest rock Paul has sung since 'rockshow' and/or 'helter skelter'.these two tracks featured guest appearances by Dave Gilmour,Hank Marvin,Pete Townshend,Kenney Jones,Ronnie Laine, Gary Brooker, John Paul Jones and John Bonham, a who's who of guitarists.
it wasnt long after this album was released that Paul McCartney was busted for drug possession in Japan and the group split up, Denny Laine especially was not impressed by Pauls misdeameanors surrounding drug useage.

PHOTGRAPH SMILE-Julian Lennon
John Charles Julian Lennon was born in the UK,april 8th 1963, and was the only child to John and Cynthia Lennon. as a young child Julian had very little to do with his father and Paul McCartney basically took over the father role. the Beatles wrote 2 songs that were inspired by Julian(lucy in the sky with diamonds-the title came from a painting julian did at school, and Hey Jude, originally titled 'hey jules). Julians first recording was in the mid 1970's,playing drums on his fathers track 'ya-ya' from the 'walls and bridges' lp. it wasnt until 1984 that julian released his first album 'valotte',named after the villa in france where he recorded it, the album spawned a hit single 'too late for goodbyes', a good catchy pop song complete with the Lennonesque vocals he inherited from his father, thus the media criticised him heavily for trying to be like John, this was not the case, Julian was being Julian, but the media disagreed. Julian plugged away for the next decade releasing a further 4 or 5 albums which i found spasmatic in their quality, although he did have one great single 'saltwater',which i believe John would have been proud of,but being the son of a Beatle he was always pushing up hills to gain respect. finally in 1998 Julian released 'photograph smile', a very good album, still with the Lennon vocals and one song that was almost a Beatle song 'i dont wanna know', even the video for the song paid hommage to the Fab4.'photograph smile' was Julians last album to date, he moved to france and opened several resturaunts and invested other money in an online company.little has been heard from or about him in the last decade.

LOVE OVER GOLD-DIRE STRAITS
this album was originally released in 1982,it is right in the middle of 3 classic albums, the others being 'making movies' and 'brothers in arms'.
i find it very hard to say anything bad about this album, the lyrics, the music, even the cover...its all fantastic. one song scheduled for the final album, but which Mark Knopfler left off was 'private dancer' which became the comeback hit for Tina Turner and ressurected her career in the 1980s and 1990s.theres not much else to say about this album other than it is 'near perfection'. the album reached #1 in the UK, but only #19 in theUSA. 'industrial disease' was released as the US single reaching a poor #75 in the singles charts, 'private investigations', probably the least commercial of the tracks on the album was released as a single in the UK and reached a staggering #2 on the singles charts.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM(especially in cd quality)
