just listening to 'the promise', Springsteens new double set...i should be in bed asleep(9.40pm) but i cant leave it at one disc, and like Tiggi wrote somewhere the other day...why were these songs not released in the '70s???, if most of these are truly from the 'darkness' sessions they should have been released and 'darkness on the edge of town shouldve been a double album or released as a seperate album between that one and 'the river', there is not a dud track amongst the 21 tracks, which makes me wonder, how many more jems has The Boss got hidden away in his vaults?

It is amazing over the years:
In the early days of rock and roll/popular music ..............you got your twelve tracks on your album.
Your heard somewhere that there might be out takes or alternative versions but..................well they were not really that good and.................you know.
Come the came sixties.........and bootlegs..................poor quality out takes and other versions arrive in a limited form
The eighties and CDs come
They are expensive but a bit longer and well twelve tracks look a bit mean for that much so we get a bonus!!!!!
Much better CD bootlegs come..............We get great quality out takes and alternative versions.....................in some cases the bootlegs are brilliant!
Finally the record companies have to face it............they can't rip us off any longer ( Or the bootleggers make too much.)
In a trickle at first and then a deluge ...we finally begin to get all that we should.........and we find that there are many gems hidden away in the vaults for a record company to keep making extortionate amounts from.
Who says that bootleggers are the villains?:biggrin1::nod::nod:

Agreed, Gryphon good point about the record companies holding onto unreleased material. I've always thought that music should be free and musicians should make their money from touring and selling merchandise. I think that is what the future could hold. They will never manage to stop every single person from downloading music for free. Personally, I go to a lot of gigs, buy a lot of merchandise, buy cds and promote artists I like through general word of mouth and on this forum also. To echoe, a previous post by Gryphon I think it's alright so long as your intentions are good.

Good compilation of most of the band's decent singles, plus a couple of Dave Davies' solo releases.
Not sure of the chronology, but I've always felt that Ray Davies stole extensively from The Beatles in the early years. Having said that, once he found his song-writing feet, at his best he could hold his place amongst the very best of UK artists.
The Kinks are sorely under-represented in my collection (only have this comp). This needs to be rectified...

LYNYRD SKYNYRD "Second Coming" 1974. vinyl
i got my Confederate flag flying today!
this is Lynyrds second album,as the album title suggests and its a beauty!
its a mixture of great riffs and grooves, "i need you' is a bluesy track,the rest of the album is what can be best described as bar-room or pub rock with the final track "call me the breeze" an uptempo shuffle."sweet Home Alabama" is a 'proud to be from the south' fist raising classic, it was written in response to two Neil Young songs: Southern Man(after the goldrush) and Alabama(harvest).
the album is so good that 'sweet home alabama' does not stand out from the rest of the tracks, but fits in nicely.
the lyrical content is intelligent and concise, no 'bs' just great lyrics and music.
unfortunately, for the band, a plane crash in 1977 involving vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and two other band membersstopped the band in its tracks, they have reformed since though.
as a footnote, their final album before the fateful accident, 'street survivors', featured all seven members on the cover surrounded by fire, over the heads of three of the members heads on the cover are also flames....these happened to be the three members that died not long after. fate,superstition or coincidence?
as another footnote, Neil Young was on stage in the US when news came through of the plane crash, NY responded by singing 'sweet home alabama' as a tribute during that show, unfortunately i cant find it on youtube,nor have i ever heard it, hopefully it will feature on his 'archives vol.2' set.

good review for a good album.
Can't remember if I've done this one yet.
I have that Street Survivors album with the original cover of the flames.
They redid the pic for all subsequent releases
These good ol boys are still together and had a new album last year I think.
Don't have it, but heard it and it wasn't near as bad as I was fearing.
Then saw them perform something from it on something (lol).
It was another one of those rebel pride songs with a little country feel.
They were good.

thanks for the additional info, a couple of the links are from the last few years and the singer isnt too bad at all, this is the only one of their albums ive got, i will get more as i decide to upgrade their material to cd...theyre on 'the get list', but its about a mile long at the moment LOL

Tiggi----that's twice you've surprised me.
First with the Moodies and now the Kinks.
My third favorite group to come out of the British invasion.
You know the first two.
The Kinks are probably over-represented in my collection.
Loved all of their 60's, 70's work and even into the 80's.
Ray Davies has also done some excellent solo material.
