What Are You Listening To?
Tom Verlaine went on to do some solo work.
I have a couple that were decent but nothing close to Marquee Moon

Oh yeah that's right. How did I forget... I've got two of his solo albums 'Tom Verlaine' (1979) & 'Dreamtime' (1981). His self titled debut is the better of the two, very quirky songs and a particular strange track called 'Yonki Time'. I think the best track from the debut is one called 'The Grip Of Love'.

Sorry, only vid I could find. You still get the awesome riff though.

Superb album.

Varies between Cohenesque ballads and Cramps-like Punkabilly, and covers most bases in between.

Cave doesn't always do it for me, but at his best he's phenomenal...

That's a fantastic album Tiggi. Have you heard 'Henry's Dream' album from a few years before? It's even better. Love Nick Cave's music.

Been listening to this album non-stop for about a month after seeing Ten Years After playing 'Goin Home' @ Woodstock on youtube. Alvin Lee's solo material is outstanding. Sounds great live too, would love to see him sometime.

Consists of mostly solo material from his 'Nineteen Ninety Four' album which was his latest at the time plus fantastic covers of 'I Hear You Knockin', 'Johnny B Goode' and most impressively Sonny Boy Wiliamson's 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl'. His version is the best cover version I've ever heard so far.

Currently considering this album for my upcoming review. If you're into the blues then you'll like this one! (Tiggi- you might want to add it to your 'live blues albums' list.)

I haven't heard Henry's Dream, but have been researching Cave's albums that I don't have over the last couple of days. More Cave purchases coming up !!

And oddly, I've been thinking about researching Ten Years After due to the same Woodstock footage you're talking about...

Recommended by our very own Music Head some months ago.

Top album from Canadian band who remind me of Pixies, or Smashing Pumpkins without quite the same level of ferocity as either.

Good songs throughout.

Thanks for the recommendation, Ed...

Original American 'emo' or 'post hardcore' band from the mid 80s. Short lived and only ever played 15 gigs.
My mate recentley gave away a CD of this band because he said they were 'pish'. Just out of curiousity, I downloaded one of their albums just to see how bad it really is. While it isn't the worst music I've ever heard, it certainly isn't the best either!

Not a fan of Costello but 'Pump It Up' is a brilliant song and probably the only one I like. As for New Waves 'finest lyricist' I personally think guys like Nick Lowe, David Byrne & Tom Verlaine are ahead of Costello in that field. Anyone ever noticed the similarity between Graham Coxon (of Blur) and Costello? He must have been one of Coxon's biggest influences!

Phish- Billy Breathes (1996)

Just revisiting one of my favourite albums. I personally think this is Phish's greatest achievement and despite my earlier thoughts it is actually quite popular. Probably thier most accessible album but there are some really beautiful songs such as 'Waste' and tracks with a slightly bluesy feel like 'Character Zero'. Basically, any other Phish album I've heard hasn't matched up to this one.

Free (this was their most successful single):

Waste:

^This is my favourite song from the album, the lyrics on it are fantastic, especially the opening lines;

"Don't want to be an actor pretending on the stage
Don't want to be a writer with my thoughts out on the page
Don't want to be a painter 'cause everyone comes to look
Don't want to be anything where my life's an open book

A dream it's true
But I'd see it through
If I could be
Wasting my time with you

Don't want to be a farmer working in the sun
Don't want to be an outlaw always on the run
Don't want to be a climber reaching for the top
Don't want to be anything where I don't know when to stop

A dream it's true
But I'd see it through
If I could be
Wasting my time with you

So if I'm inside your head
Don't believe what you might have read
You'll see what I might have said
To hear it

Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me

So if I'm inside your head
Don't believe what you might have read
You'll see what I might have said
To hear it

Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me
Come waste your time with me"
