Apple Records Apple 21 to 35
#1
APPLE 21
Billy Preston..........................All That I've Got/As I Get Older
An interesting side remark on this is that Apple published this as sheet music. ( This had been an age old custom of publishing the sheet music of record releases but by the 70’s it was dying out)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u728QQ8vLcA

Beatle Connection Produced by George Harrison
APPLE 22
Mary Hopkin.........................Temma Harbour /Lontano Dagli Occhi
Mary managed a sizable UK hit with this track which recycled the B side from APPLE 7:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBwutzZPgW4
It is said that Mary really hated doing this song but it did bring her success.....
Released in Holland . USA,France, Denmark, Australia,Japan, Norway.........................
Beatle involvement???????????
APPLE 23
Jackie Lomax.........................How The Web Was Woven/Thumbing A Ride
Both of these were album tracks .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-LZswPvUz0
Beatle Involvement : A side produced by George ................The B Side by Paul
APPLE 24
Doris Troy.............................Ain't That Cute/Vaya Con Dios
Doris Troy represented a stab by Apple at the soul market.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3WgefsutA0
Beatle involvement : George played guitar on the A and B sides of this release. It apaers that George may also be the co-writer of the A side!
Unofficially I came across this on the internet , there have been many unreleased albums on Apple and this entry suggests that Doris Troy had one too and that this single came from that album. It also suggests that it has been put out on either the Remastered Apple Albums or/and on the Apple boxed set of remasters:

Doris Troy was a singer and piano player who first became famous as the writer of the song, "Just One Look" (That's All It Took).
She can be found singing on The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want". And on Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon".
In 1970 she was signed by The Beatles for their Apple Music Company. They recorded an album with all-stars and Beatles themselves but when John, George and Ringo outvoted Paul (who wanted his father-in-law to take over The Beatles finances) and Allen Klein was brought in instead, this album was then not released.
I can't be sure of who plays on what track but one can guess sometimes by the writing credits.

Doris Troy 1970

1-Ain't That Cute (Troy/Harrison)
2-Special Care (Stills)
3-Give Me Back My Dynamite (Troy/Harrison)
4-You Tore Me Up Inside (Troy)
5-Games People Play (Joe South)
6-Gonna Get My Baby Back (Troy/Harrison/Starr/Stills)
7-I've Got To Be Strong (Troy)
8-Hurry (Troy/Greg Carroll)
9-So Far (Troy/Voorman)
10-Exactly Like You (McHugh/Fields)
11-You Give Me Joy Joy (Harrison/Starr/Stills/Troy)
12-Don't Call Me No More (Troy)
13-Jacob's Ladder (Traditional)

Bonus Tracks:

14-All That I've Got (Preston/Troy)
15-Get Back (Lennon/McCartney)
16-Dearest Darling (Troy)
17-What You Will Blues (Troy)
18-Vaya Con Dios (Pepper/James/Russell)

What is interesting here are the writing collaborations and the fact that she worked with The Rolling Stones ! When I checked this out it appears to have been issued as part of the Remaster set on its own ..........It has no SAPCOR code instead bears a code of B003XSSRC4 suggesting that t has only just been allocated a release in 2010!
APPLE 25
Radha Krishna Temple..........................Govinda/Govinda Jai Jai
Quite an historic point considering what was to follow many years later.
(Kula Shaker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SyVaLpa_vc&feature=fvw )
Here we have Apple into Indian cross over music and sure enough many years later it became popular...............
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hLrMXa4oH4
Beatle involvement : George Produced
APPLE 26
Mary Hopkin...........................Knock Knock Who's There /I'm Going To Fall In Love Again
Mary Hopkin was picked to represent the UK in the Eurovision song contest and this was quite a feather in Apple’s cap. Already popular in many European countries, Mary was thought to stand a good chance for the UK. Chosen from six songs this was considered to be the strongest of the six. I believe the B side to be the runner up. Numbers 3 to 6 must also exist in the Apple vaults because at one point an EP of all six was considered for release. This release was somewhat hurried and as a result only Mono masters seem to exists as this song has never seen a Stereo release
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTnJPme1z...re=related
I have included the B side as I believe it is as strong as the A side as a Eurovision song !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jhkyUZb3...re=related
I think the result of the 1970 contest was a little difficult to clarify but, it seems that Mary come second.
The single was released in most European countries and was a reasonable hit in many. Canadian copies have a different B side .........International.
An note of Apple’ situation and the more naive, Apple had secured copyright and distribution for most countries but there were exceptions. This coupling appeared in Iran of all places on an EP with two Beatle tracks but there was no mention of Apple anywhere on the release as it was not a registered trade mark in Iran !)
Beatle involvement: ???????????
APPLE 27
Mary Hopkin..........................Que Sera Sera/Fields Of St. Etienne
This is a little bit odd, here was Mary riding high on a good performance in the Eurovision song contest and basically it is followed up with a reissue.................seems like an accountants’ move to use up some of the effort put into the first issue. Needless to say this was a very poor seller and makes it a rare Apple single. There was considerable disorganisation at Apple and as previously noted Apple 16 was to be a Mortimer single................maybe this is why Apple 27 was basically a reissue.
It has also been suggested that Apple 27 was once earmarked for another Jackie Lomax single, Going Down To Liverpool:

Beatle involvement :????????????
APPLE 28
Doris Troy........................................Jacob's Ladder/Get Back
A second single from the unreleased Doris Troy album notable for its cover of Get Back on the B side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA8lTyi_3xE
This bearers the super group production of George Harrison , Stephen Stills and Doris Troy.
The B side was not included on the original album and may well feature George on guitar.

Beatle Involvement : Producer George Harrison.................B side Lennon/McCartney
APPLE 29
Billy Preston...................My Sweet Lord/Long As I Got My Baby
To all intents and purposes this single remained unreleased..............it predated George’s version by a few months and presumably was held back because it would be competition to the Beatle’s version.
This is the only rack so far that cannot be found in it’s original form but I have located alive version to show how it might sound. The original must still be in the Apple vaults:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azAk9rCJ7fg
Clearly this is an excellent cover and one can see that it might compete well with George’s version. This single was not released in the UK as far as I can tell...........it was not put out elsewhere either. Demo copies must exist and maybe with UK labels ???? It seems that the USA did get a full release of this track.
Beatle Involvement: George as writer and I guess George as quality control person in Apple too.
APPLE 30
Mary Hopkin...............................Think About Your Children /Heritage
By now Mary’s career was burning less brightly, she was less in the spotlight after her Eurovision success and as she now being produced by Tony Visconti , so Apple were beginning to lose interest in her. This said Mary’s music was becoming less pop influenced and more true to her folk roots:
Heritage is a Galliger and Lyle composition and showed that Mary was in contact with musicians other than those in Beatle circles. The A side was written by members of Hot Chocolate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8OaSAoCnEQ
Beatle involvement :As far as I can tell : None
APPLE 31
Badfinger..........................No Matter What/Better Days
In the UK this was a top 5 hit, restoring Apple’s image as a successful record company.
To the Wiki:
As a demo, "No Matter What" was originally recorded by Ham on acoustic guitar and performed with a mambo beat (as heard on the posthumous Ham solo CD 7 Park Avenue). A rough, rockier version of the song was recorded by Badfinger in March 1970 and produced by Mal Evans. The song was recorded again by the band in April 1970 at Abbey Road Studios and it was this version that would appear on the album and single.
Although the song and recording was a favorite of Badfinger's shortly after it was recorded, the hierarchy at Apple reportedly was not inclined to release it in any format. It was not until Al Steckler, the American director of Apple in New York, heard the tape in the summer of 1970 and considered it a strong entry by the band that it was slotted for the upcoming LP and as a single release.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0BxMZB6J...re=related
Beatle involvement: Production was by Mal Evan s The Beatles roadie
APPLE 32
James Taylor...............................Carolina In My Mind/Something's Wrong
Apple did have a nose for talent and James was their biggest find. HE recorded his first album for Apple and as a result a single followed.....................James was the first non-British talent signed to Apple..........
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MIk8XqO3J0
Beatle involvement : McCartney and an uncredited George Harrison guested on "Carolina in My Mind”

APPLE 33
By now Apple had undergone many changes and The Beatles had appointed Alan Klein to tidy up the business.Phil Spector was working as an unofficial A and R man for them and hence it was not unnatural for him to record his own artist on the label:Ronnie was at that point his wife and had been better known as Veronica Yvette Bennett from the Ronnetts. Try Some Buy Some was a George Harrison song which I believe he was considering releasing himself............There is an unofficial take of this with a very strong George guide vocal ( Too good to be a casual demo !) It did finally turn up on Extra Texture.
Ronnie Spector..............................Try Some, Buy Some/Tandoori Chicken
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INULgzHN6c0
George Harrison’s version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZYtuaD0yhQ&feature=fvw
Notice that this is the same backing track

Many years later Bowie also covered the track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyY_-wDVf...re=related
By the way the “it” is Heroine!
Beatle involvement: George wrote it and I assume played on it too........
APPLE 34
Mary Hopkin.......................Let My Name Be Sorrow/Kew Gardens
A token effort by Apple to keep Mary’s career alive. This was her last Apple single and only managed a lowly 46 in the UK charts.................
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNTv3Af5hUw
An excellent effort from Mary in her more natural style........This got arelease in New Zealand and Australia. It is an album track.................In addition it appears to have had a Japanese release as here it is in Japanese:
http://www.myspace.com/video/vid/36148103
Beatle involvement : ?????????????
APPLE 35
Badfinger..........................Name Of The Game/Suitcase
This is another cancelled release................It appears that the Apple board thought this was too weak for a single release..............The track does appear on the album” Straight Up” but the singles was not to have featured the album version...............instead it was to have featured a rerecorded version produced by Geoff Emerick ..............This is a fuller version than the album version and only gained a full release in 2010 on the re-mastered Straight up CD .
Below is the album version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usph3xDn1mc
At this point Bandfinger were touring heavily in the US but their career was fading in the UK. IN experience management by Apple etc was to cost them dear in terms of success.
Beatle involvement :Geoff Emerick was the Beatles engineer and would work successfully with Paul in the 70s.
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.
