Agree with what your saying here (Y) Talent and success don't seem to be close with one another these days, compared to previous era's. I reckon the influence nowadays of commercial branding and as usual the media, do sort of have a part to play in it all. I guess Beiber can have a hundred million views to a very talented artist with less then a thousand. Some commercial artists do have genuine passion for music, at least they seem to in most occasions

Mainstream is a great way to reach more people with the music you enjoy, once your in the industry you can transition back to being yourself from all the labels request and shaping an image for you look at lady gaga she came out with Just Dance type music and look how much she changed and now she makes the music she loves, it gets head and enjoyed by millions and on top of all that gets paid heavy, you just got to be smart and do it right...WHY NOT MAINSTREAM??

One could argue that in our fast-paced times one doesn't have as much time left to delve into the unplumbed depths of music so they take what's there, what's being served by MTV - provided that MTV decides to air some music videos and cuts the crap that is Jersey Shore for once.

Lady Gaga is a very talented artist ! Lady has a lot more up her sleeve , I'm sure . I've listened to her music and interviews and there's something of a musical genius in her. Her music is NOT ALL mainstream either...there's some uunderground type music in her repertoire. I'm not knocking her or mainstream just simply giving my opinion.

Ask someone who Cage the Elephant or Avett Brothers are and most wouldn't know in a random sample. If you ask who Lady Gaga or Katie Perry were ,,,you'd get a much more knowledgeable response. I never knock atrtists or music in general...to each his own...remember decades ago The Beatles, Rolling Stones and even Bob Dylan were considered mainstream ! With the advent of several genres today mainstream means a connection to the majority of music lovers ...that's all.There's so much more music out there that unfortunately millions of people will never hear ! I think one of MD's purpose is to give the members an opportunity to discover new music ....modern and older ! It's a great place to be !

Mainstream music is still alright and the music is still good but there are many roadblocks now. Now I hear Lady Gaga copycats, Lil Wayne copycats, and T-Pain wannabes. Those are the problems today.
