What Are You Listening To?
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:The Church werent really that popular here, had more of a cult following with the 'student' 'artsy' types. i only have their debut album somewhere and a greatest hits, very underrated band who were before their time, nick cave also springs to mind as being the same.
im sure they are still recording, thought i read somewhere a while ago that they were releasing an album of new material, not sure if its out or coming out.

sorry you've had 200cds stolen, i had half a dozen stolen out of my car a few years back...and i was pissed over that!

House was broke into when not home.
They were all in one rack and that's all that was taken.
One of the hazards of living in the country and the reason now that someone is always here.

This actually graded out a little lower than I expected as I am a huge Parker fan. But I guess that was more back with the Rumour. Brinsley Schwarz is part of the lineup here on this tenth effort. As usual lyrics are superb on most of this so it has to be the music or maybe the fire. Maybe he just couldn't squeeze out enough sparks. First release for a new label (RCA), so that could be a factor. Also his first self produced. Only one standout track and a couple of misses. Good cover of Sam Cookes Cupid which is pretty dead on. Most of it holds up very well, I think due to lyrics. It debuted at #77 in the states and went down from there. Singles were Don't Let It Break You Down and Get Started, Start A Fire, neither of which charted.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

My interest in this was triggered by a magazine review which likened the band to Grandaddy, who I adore.

The parallels are pretty legitimate, although the Papercuts' sound contains prominent use of various organs, which is a good thing.

Dreamy, & mellow Alt-Rock songs. A definite thumbs-up.

Cars frontman with his first solo effort. I think that the Cars had maxed out as a group and Ric could have written his own ticket, which he probably did. For me this was the wrong one. Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes was along for the ride. This is one of those albums that probably made me thankful for the punk movement. Just too techno for my taste. The opening for the leadoff track sums it up. With a split between tracks that were ok and tracks that downright sucked, it would be a no buy for me now. It did reach #28 in the states on the strength of the Cars name no doubt. Something To Grab For made the pop charts at #47. The clip for track #9 includes track 10. Can't believe both my best and worst are the only tracks to have no clip. Go figure.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Take A Walk

Best Track - Prove

you could show me all your photographs
you could have me hanging high
you could tell me about the mystery
hiding in your eyes
there's one to many reasons
why i should be with you
but i'll just be in season
just like you want me to
you don't have to prove a thing
pretty girl pretty girl
you could tell me secrets
that i would only keep
you can have your soup du jour
when you're fast asleep
when you turn me over
i won't waste your time
put on your precious makeup
you won't stand in line
i'm standing in your doorway
i know you never lock it
i won't try to walk away
with something in my pocket
everything you want to do
it easily gets done
even on a rainy day
you could pull the sun

SPLIT ENZ "history never repeats...the 30th anniversary" 2003.

this best of set was released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of their formation and 19yrs after their split.
'The Enz' as they are affectionately known as in Australasia were formed by Tim Finn in New Zealand and they relocated to Australia in 1975, their first two albums flopped as did their first few singles, Neil Finn,Tim's younger brother joined the band during one of their lineup changes in 1977,this brought about a change of fortunes to the band's chart success shortly afterwards.their first real chart hit was the punkish/new wave track 'i see red' which peaked at #15 in Australia, top 10 in NZ. over the next seven years they enjoyed regular success on the charts at home and abroad.its hard to define their sound as theyve had hits with rock/pop/ballads/vaudville/jazz
the success im talking about is top20 hits, they were never huge in their day as their comedic videos, costumes and antics were 'out there'.
they are now looked at fondly and with respect by their contemporaries worldwide, most noteably Paul McCartney, who has been quoted saying the Finn Brothers are as good as the Beatles, and IMHO i concur with that, other musos that regard them highly as writers/singers and performers include Eddie Vedder,Noel Gallagher, Tom Petty, Elton John, Bono.
Neil and Tim used to give eachother song titles to build songs around. both are multi talented musicians.
Neil Finn went on to form Crowded House who had worldwide success in the mid 1980s and early 1990s, both Neil and Tim are now enjoying solid solo careers and occasionally record together as 'the finn brothers', Split Enz reformed in 2006 for a national tour of New Zealand and Australia to rave reviews and sellout stadium shows.

Energetic, nerdy, and slightly spiky Post-Punk debut from 1980.

Influences abound, and include VU, & Talking Heads, and their sound can be heard reflected in the early music of REM.

They manage to sound remarkably fresh and invigorating, and this is a great album.
