Seen as we're on the subject of the Stones, this is one of their albums I bought a few weeks ago.

Not exactly one of their essential releases with this album at times leaning into serious disco-territory rather than the blues-rock that made them famous. Most of the tracks on the album are unmemorable despite the album's first single 'Fool To Cry' being a top ten hit in the UK.


This is one of the few and the earliest Stones record I own with the others being 'Voodoo Lounge' ('94), 'Stripped' (live comp album) & 'Bigger Band' (2005)- all of which I don't really rate above average. Been meaning to get some of their much earlier 60s blues/psychedelic rock albums which would be a fairer point on which to judge.

personally i dont think they were a great 'albums' band, their 1960s singles, for the most part, were good,even the 'b'sides were ok back then.

Think it was John Lennon that said something like "If they were to rename rock 'n' roll, they would just call it Chuck Berry". Can't argue with that. The guy defines the term. This compilation starts with 1959 and Chuck was rockin' way before then. This is volume 2 in this cd Chess reissue and I do not have volume 1 only because I have those tracks on vinyl. I will probably end up getting volume 1 at some point. Why? Because it's Chuck Berry. Once again, hard to pick a best and worst. Why? Because it's Chuck Berry. The legen is 83 years old and I'm not sure if he's still performing today, but I know as recently as a couple of years ago he was still performing and doing that duck walk.

ive also watched a couple of his latest clips from 2010, its so sad to see him now, i should have given them a miss, but... as NY said "hey hey, my my, rock n roll will never die"

Bought in response to our very own Global Mod of the same name, who's a big fan.

This sounded OK, so I now have my first Gryphon album.

Instrumental Medieval Prog Rock of a high standard. Frequently reminded me of Yes, and also bears strong similarities to my recently rediscovered fave Prog band The Enid. Loosely based on a game of chess, apparently, but trying to visualise that was getting in the way of the music, so that was lost on me.

Can't think of many albums I own which may contain Krumhorn playing, but this is apparently certainly one !!

Good album, cheers Griff.

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION "black country" 2010. cd

firstly,
i dont think our soulman Mr.Soul is going to be too pleased with this review,sorry man!
the album includes ex-members of Led Zepelin,Sabbath,Deep Purple,Alice Cooper's band and bluesman Joe Bonamassa. it should be a 'supergroup' of sorts(pardon the cliche) but IMO ends up a 'superpoop' of sorts??
the forst time i listened to it there were only three or four tracks that 'rocked' me, on subsequent listens that number rose to half the album, the other half still sucks big time! i was never a fan of Deep Purple and thats probably where the fault lies on my part. this, to me, sounds like regurgitated 1970s prog-rock. i think the main problem with the album is that is was layed down and mixed etc within two weeks, which is not a bad thing for 'blues' or for 'spontinaity', but it could have been so much better had the band road tested these songs and refined them a bit more before booking studio time.
the album is full of bluesy riffs that seem to merge into one all too often,having been all negative so far, there are six fine tracks on this on, i have the album version which includes a dvd, i havent watched it yet but am looking foreward to seeing the band interviews at some point, and that may eventually change my view of the album slightly.
for me, the best track here is "songs of yesterday", which incidently is sung by bluesman Joe Bonamassa and not the bands lead vocalist Glen Hughes,the track itself is eight and a half minutes long but you wouldnt know it as it flows beautifully without too much repetition.

I think Mr. Soul is more of a "rocker" than we are at this stage of his life.
Nothing wrong with that. Thirty years ago, could have said the same of myself.
Just call it mellowing with age.

NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE "life" 1987. cd. #71US, #75UK.

i have always been consciously aware not to review NY cds here,because im such a big fan and its so easy to lean 'pro' towards an artist i/we like...but here i go!

the nineteen eighties werent a good tome for NY,he left 'reprise records' and went from the frying pan and into the fire with his friend David Geffen who tried to control him musically, he had a severely disabled son born, and his recordings for the most part, were the worst of his career(Mr.Soul disagrees with me over this period of NY's career,but thats ok,its only opinion anyway,theres no right or wrong with music).
this was NY's first outing with Crazy Horse since 1981,and although the album is dissapointing musically there is light at the end of the tunnel for NY fans as after this one NY started to get his 'mojo' back!
the album for the most part is laden with those horrible 1980s drum beats that sound synthesised. the lyrics are also sub standard for NY but show signs of improvement over his last few albums.

Mideast Vacation is a slow track suppoting Reagan on his arms buildups,yes NY was flying the 'stars and stripes' on this one

Long Walk Home is a classic piano song that could have fitted well on a number of his albums

Around The World is just a horrible song with no sense of purpose,its 'messy'

Inca Queen has some nice acoustic guitar work but it feels as though its a rehash of "like an inca" and "cortez the killer" in one song

Too Lonely is a fairly good edgy CH track

Prisoners Of Rock 'n' Roll is a cliched mess aimed at David Geffen

Cryin' Eyes is an average NY song but sounds pretty good amongst this disasterous set

When Your Lonely Heart Breaks starts off nicely enough but becomes meaningless after the first four and a half minutes

When We Danced feels like NY needs another song to complete the album and is going through the motions

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM! admittedly,this one sounds better live than on cd...thats part and parcel of Crazy Horses music!
