from my library (cd)
Well, I'm beginning my Cohen cd's, so prepare for high marks. One of the few artists that I have most of the work on both vinyl and cd. I try not to post both, but sometimes that may slip by, sorry. This is Leonards debut and may be my favorite. Not a bad song here and only two that I don't absolutely love. Very hard to pick a favorite. Could never understand the lack of Cohens popularity as far as album sales. Anyone fairly knowledgable of music is aware of his work yet that has never transferred to sales. Granted, a debut album would not be expected to fare that well, but all later ones would meet the same fate of only selling well in his native Canada. A little more popular in Europe, but never cracked the market in the states. This album went to #83 here. Although the album eventually reached gold status, that would not happen until 1989, when it resurfaced on the U.K. charts, going to #13, when it was released on cd. Few musicians have ever created a more remarkable or enduring debut album. My praises for the man work could go on but I'll leave it at that. I suspect Leonards days are numbered and his passing will be a sad day for me.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Winter Lady
Best Track - Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but now it's come to distances and both of us must try,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

well, its taken a long time for me to purchase one of his cds, i could never get 'into' him, always thought he was a serious, boring old fart.
today, however, with time and temperance,i actually listened to him properly and cant believe just how good the guy is, and i just checked out three of the tracks that are not on the compilation i bought today and theyre pretty good also....i guess my LC collection started today, gonna try to get this one next,
thanks MH for the coincidental posting today.

MH's appreciation of Cohen's work is deeper and more long-standing than mine, but I think it's fair to say that if you make a breakthrough into Cohen's music, he'll be a favourite for life.
Today's a great day, Crazy-Man...

An F for the cover to start with. Yes there is one there. But it's what's inside that counts. Third album from this male/female duo from Baltimore. New label for them of Sub-Pop. First one I've heard and just may be good enough to backtrack, although this is defined as a new sound for them. Victoria Legrand, the female half, has also done some work with Grizzly Bear, who they have toured with. Her vocals have been compared to Nico. Most of the album is a dreamy pop sound with nothing I can say was bad. Album just misses the love mark, and a few more plays would do it. Zebra and Norway have both been released as singles. The album made many Best Of lists for the year. This package also included a dvd of videos of each track. Have not got around to watching it, and maybe never will. I bought it for the audio, not the video. The album reached #43 on the U.S. charts.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Real Love
Best Track - Zebra
You know you're gold, you don't gotta worry none
Oasis child, born and so wild
Don't I know you better than the rest
All deception, all deception from you
Your love is stag in the white sand
Wilderness for miles, eyes so mild and wise
Don't I know you better than the rest
All deception, all deception from you
Any way you run, you run before us
Black and white horse arching among us
Your love is stag in the white sand
Oasis child born into a man
Don't I know you better than the rest
All deception, all deception from you
Wilderness for miles, eyes so mild and wise
Oasis child, born and so wild
Don't I know you better than the rest
All deception, all deception from you
Any way you run, you run before us
Black and white horse arching among us
