ACE FREHLEY "kiss" 1978, vinyl, Russian picture disc and cd #48 Aust, #26 US

not sure whether this will upset some guitat purists, but IMO Ace Frehley is one of the greatest Lead Guitarists ever...what he cant do with a pick and a fretboard aint worth doing!, he had it all...talent,charisma and a prescence that commands attention....along with flying guitars and one that could shoot rockets LOL!
up until this solo album Ace had only written a handful of tracks for KISS so a lot of people eagerly awaited his solo album to see what he could do, well half the album is reasonable, the other half total rubbish. the album opens up with two very good tracks, then theres two tracks that deal with substance abuse(three in all on the album-and the reason he was eventually asked to leave KISS!). track six is a cover of New York Groove(never heard the original version) but this is a classic version IMO.
i guess the final track "fractured mirror", an instrumental is one of the best on the album, it features multi-layered guitars and ebbs and winds for five and a half minutes, and shows exactly what Ace is capable of playing.
as im not really into this heavy guitar drenched album it doesnt get the rating of someone who is as it is too much of a muchness to listen to in one stint with plugs in the ears....sort of like aural rape!

PAUL STANLEY "kiss" 1978, vinyl, Russian picture disc and cd #58 Aust, #40 US

Paul Stanley was and still is the most important mamber of KISS, and at 60+ years of age shows no sign of slowing down.
whereas, in the early days of me being a KISS fan, i was like most other guys who either liked Gene or Ace,probably for their theatrics more than anything else, but as i got older it was apparent that Paul was the "rocker" and most talented member.
this album from the "time out" of 1978 is the most KISSlike of all the albums with its rock 'n' roll, blues number(aint quite right) and its soaring rock ballads, theres plenty of Paul's trademark riffs attached to these songs and some sing-a-long chorus lines, which all make for a pleasant rock album, only Peter's and Paul's albums sound fresh today, Ace and Gene's sound a bit flat and dated, thus the reflection in the ratings for each album.
Paul has a really good strong rock voice and is among the best around at crafting a great rock song, as long as there is a Paul Stanley around rock will never die!

As usual, the Doors score way up there for me on this fifth album. After their previous release of The Soft Parade, did not fare as well as expected, the group went back to a more bluesy approach on most of this one. Works for me, with the leadoff track of Roadhouse Blues, and 5 other tracks getting that top rating. Peace Frog works the best for me, and no tracks I don't like. Although no singles scored big from here, the album went to #4 in the U.S. and became their highest charting album in the U.K. at #12. Interesting side note, the back cover of this album shows the original Hard Rock Cafe in L.A. This one is a dive where the local old men hung out. The name for the Hard Rock Cafe that we know, was picked up from this album cover.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Queen Of The Highway

Best Track - Peace Frog

There's blood in the streets, it's up to my ankles
She came
Blood in the streets, it's up to my knee
She came
Blood in the streets in the town of Chicago
She came
Blood on the rise, it's following me
Think about the break of day

She came and then she drove away
Sunlight in her hair

She came
Blood in the streets runs a river of sadness
She came
Blood in the streets it's up to my thigh
She came
Yeah the river runs red down the legs of a city
She came
The women are crying red rivers of weepin'

She came into town and then she drove away
Sunlight in her hair

Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind

Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven
Blood stains the roofs and the palm trees of Venice
Blood in my love in the terrible summer
Bloody red sun of Phantastic L.A.

Blood screams her brain as they chop off her fingers
Blood will be born in the birth of a nation
Blood is the rose of mysterious union

There's blood in the streets, it's up to my ankles
Blood in the streets, it's up to my knee
Blood in the streets in the town of Chicago
Blood on the rise, it's following me
