This is Rics sophomore solo effort. I did the first one back a little in this thread. When I pulled this one out, I thought, it has to be better than that last one. Just barely, by one tenth of a point. I guess this Cars electronic sound was starting to wear out for me around this period. Love most of the Cars stuff, and this is obviously Cars sounding. Hell, all of the other members of the Cars show up on this album, with Hawkes on the entire album. For me Rics well had run dry by this point, and I dropped him from my "must hear the next album" list. Not that all the songs are bad here. There are more good than bad, but nothing would ever make my heavy play list. The single off here of Emotion In Motion went to #15 on the charts here. It never worked for me. Another single of True To You was released, but #75 was the best it could do. The album peaked at #52. No clip for my fav of course.

had a mate when i was in the Navy who loved the Cars and Ric....could never understand what he saw in them personally, but from memory Ric's solo albums were terrible.

I'd have to go with Elvis out of those 3.

Another I'm having trouble getting into. Is it me? I thought I at least liked this. Not so. I do love the cover, from the painting by a French artist. As far as the contents, eight tracks, and only three of them I even liked, and two of those were a stretch. This is the second album for the ex-Joy Division members after the death of Ian. This is where new wave decides they want to be on the club floor. The electronic seems to just take over. Obviously, there are followers. Not surprising that my favorite here, Age Of Consent, is the track with only a brief synthesizer role. Don't see where this charted here, which is kind of surprising to me. They album went to #4 in the U.K.. Those song lyrics are funny. Instead of saying "I've lost you (x5)", three times, why doesn't it just say "I've lost you (x15)", only once. I'm just sayin'...................
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
Worst Track - Ectasy
Best Track - Age Of Consent
Won't you please let me go
These words lie inside they hurt me so
And I'm not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what I want to do
I'm not the kind that needs to tell you
Just what you want me to
I saw you this morning
I thought that you might like to know
I received your message in full a few days ago
I understood every word that it said
And now that I've actually heard it
You're going to regret
And I'm not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what you want me to
You're not the kind that needs to tell me
About the birds and the bees
Do you find this happens all the time
Crucial point one day becomes a crime
And I'm not the kind that likes to tell you
Just what I want to do
I'm not the kind that needs to tell you
I've lost you (x5)
I've lost you (x5)
I've lost you (x5)

^ I like that one.
Does your vinyl copy have holes punched in the sleeve like my original vinyl copy ? Mine's long ago been replaced by a CD version.
I bought this in a rush on a Monday morning after first hearing their Blue Monday single at a nightclub. Blue Monday's still a favourite, but isn't on the album. Doh !!

Yes it does. And not one place on the cover does it say the artist or album name, not even the spine. stupid.
Yea, I read about that Blue Monday thing. nice going label heads. I do see that song is on a re-release of the album.

The lack of sleeve info was typical of Factory Records. They were masters of marketing, and pulled every trick in the book to appear arty and "exclusive".
I like both Joy Division, and New Order, and have always been impressed that the band didn't try to soldier on after IC's demise, but reinvented themselves entirely, and had a second critically acclaimed "career".
BTW, for anyone that wasn't aware, both band names are lifted from Nazi terminology ?!

im not a fan of either band, but admire the reinvention after IC's death.

This 1990 release continued the band's howl of environmental protest. I always think protest songs work most effectively when they come from people who know their subject matter, and that's surely the case here.
Standard MO fare, which means it's very good indeed.
Garrett appears still to be part of the Aussie government, so he's putting his effort where his mouth is.
Although Garrett is the one that's moved into politics, I'm never sure where the songwriting originates, because if memory serves, guitarist Jim Moginie was the chief writer ?!
AllMusic 4/5 stars.
