Comes out slightly better than the last one I heard (On And On), but still the same complaint, lack of versatility. Of course there are many artists I could say that about, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. That's just Jack's niche, and that's where he fits I guess. Back to back album listens is just a little drowsy for me. I do love the title track here, and lyrically the album is very strong. This is his fourth and I missed the third. Assume there is not much difference. The album debuted at #1 in the states, as well as making #1 in the U.K. and Australia, so although not well received critically, the fans must have got what they expected. If I Had Eyes and Hope were both released as singles, but neither did much.

Excellent cover shot ^

Produced by Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois. I'm not a fan of the Lanois (BTW, he produced Le Noise, and the title is a play on his name) signature shimmery/murky sound, and this has probably had something to do with me under-appreciating this album.

This listen was much more enjoyable than I was expecting, and the album is better than I thought.

Fourth album from the Buddy Holly boys. That first one is the only one I own. Son-in-law is a big fan, so jumping into his collection. I've also heard Raditude which I like quite a bit. This one, not as muchm although a couple of tracks stand out for me, Slob and December. Unfortunately there were four tracks that were a turn off. Still end up with a passing grade here, just not as good as the other two I mentioned. This one is a lot heavier than the debut. Not having heard the second and third albums, not sure if that was a progression or a sudden diversion in their sound. The album did very well here hitting #3 on the charts, with a #16 in the U.K. Singles were Dope Nose and Keep Fishin' which both hit the Modern Rock charts.

This fifth album comes out quite better than the last for me. The presence of Beverly Hills (#1 Modern Rock, #10 Pop), which kicks butt for me, plus three other standouts and only one track that did nothing. Beverly Hills earned the group a grammy nomination. No winner though. Perfect Situation (#1 Modern Rock, #51 Pop) and We Are All On Drugs (#1 Modern Rock) were also singles. I love all three of the singles. The album reached #2 in the states and #11 across the pond. Produced by Rick Rubin. Gonna start giving anything this guy does a Rubin-Touch advantage. This album didn't fare well with the critics, with Pitchfork calling it "awful". Go figure. Once agin, different strokes.

This band is gaining some newfound respect from me, after jumping into almost the whole catalogue. Versatility is the reason. These guys have it. Another high mark on this sixth album, with Rick Rubin on board again, for at least part of the album. This was recorded in three different sessions, with different producers. This is the first album where lead vocals were spread around to all band members. Well done all. Pork and Beans was the first single. A great one but the lead off, Troublemaker (the follow up single) is my standout. The name dropping in Heart Songs is quite clever. The only thing I didn't like on here was Automatic (think it was the vocal). Nothing there. But after four great tracks to start it, and one further in, this one holds up well. The album went to #4 here and #21 in both the U.K. and Australia.

^ I have a couple of Weezer albums, but haven't investigated further. Did hear Pinkerton years ago, and wasn't much impressed.

Only in Dreams from the blue album is a favouritest song ever of mine.

Ex Grant Lee Buffalo main man's second from 2001..

Listening to one of his band's albums a few weeks back spurred me on to investigate the solo work.

This guy is certainly a very gifted song-writer, and of the four from him/the band that I've heard there isn't the remotest hint of a dud yet. Highest quality, mildly Alt-Rock songs, executed with poise and confidence.

Very strong record from an under-appreciated artist.

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

IDLEWILD "post-elcetric blues" 2009, cd.

got this one after Gryphon had it in his weekly review thread last year.
Scottish band's seventh album.
consistant indie pop/rock with nothing great nor nothing bad, some nice jangly guitars and melodies.
my favourite song here is the opening track "younger than america" purely because the sound is reminiscent of some of Crazy Horse's playing.
nice songs with good lyrics.
