RICHARD & LINDA THOMPSON - SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS (1982)

I would like to nominate this critically acclaimed folk rock album for an award nomination.

This album showcases the husband and wife duo of Richard and Linda Thompson. It also features Richard's virtuoso guitar playing of rock, folk and blues. Linda is featured as a ballad singer displaying a strong clear folk style voice.

TRACK LISTING

1.Don't Renege on Our Love - A tasteful rock guitar number with a catchy chorus led Richard's unique folky vocals and of course electric guitar.

2.Walking on a Wire - Linda on vocals singing a tasteful ballad.

3.Man in Need - Another rock orientated song with Richard singing and fabulous guitar.

4.Just the Motion - Ballad again with Linda on vocals accompanied by folkish guitar from Richard.

5.Shoot Out the Lights - The title track and tour de force of the album. Richard on vocals with a red hot seering solo on guitar !

6.Back Street Slide - Richard on vocals with this folk reel number accompanied by a brass section that replaces the fiddle.

7.Did She Jump or Was She Pushed? - Co-written by Richard and Linda(he wrote all the other tracks) - A tearful ballad again sung by Linda.

8.Wall of Death - Only track in which Richard and Linda sing as a duet. Great British folk number.

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

This has been a favourite album of mine for many years - and Thompson's output contains many favourite albums. I'll give this a vote. For anyone wanting another Richard and Linda album that isn't a compilation, I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight is essential.

What sold me on Richard Thompson was this fresh recording for a TV series of this Donovan classic--he sure takes it to a special place: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrp2iYsZTPs
