What Are You Listening To?

On the laptop.

Their second from earlier this year.

Loved the debut, so was looking forward to hearing this one. Sounds of a muchness with the debut, so is a dead cert for the Buy List. That's two albums in a row on the laptop which I've liked. A rare day indeed !!

I'm fairly sure the FFs have a strong and interesting career ahead of them. Band leader Robin Pecknold seems a pretty astute dude. Hope it all goes well for them...

Fourth album. Coulda swore I had the third. If so, it must be out of place. This one doesn't live up to those first two for me, but it'll pass. Only two track are great, 42 and Viva La Vida and the leadoff is a throw away only because it's an instrumental. Brian Eno gets some production credits here among others. I guess the band is at it's peak here with the album reaching #1 both here and on that island. Five singles didn't hurt in achieving that. Chris Martin's falsetto voice has been dropped on a lot of this, which was one of my main attractions to the band. Gotta explore I guess. The bands explanation for the title of the album being actually two titles was because Justin Timberlake did it. That sounds kind of stupid, but whatever. Just hoping the next one isn't called 6.0 as a tribute to that Bieber guy.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Life In Technicolor

Best Track - Viva La Vida

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh, who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Some more Bowie, from 1995.

This is an album I've bought twice. On release I didn't like it, and returned it, then some years later thought I'd try again, and now love it.

Dystopean cyber-punk psycho-drama (pretentious, moi ?? I know this sounds wanky, but it sums the album up quite well in my head), about an "art-crime" investigator and the advent of "art-murder".

One of Dave's more conceptish albums, and this is territory he's explored before (except the "art-murder" bit) on Diamond Dogs. The music is very different to DD, though, with this one favouring collaboration with Eno, and thudding electronic beats.

Stunning album when played loud...

Seriously, though, it is quite an intense experience at loud volumes. It might well be worth a listen...
