What is the meaning of the term " INDIE " music ?
#11
I am not so sure that just lofi groups make albums that way anymore and I don't think the big corporate (overused term) record companies have a lot of say or control over the artist these days...there's too much competiton and too many bands !They have no choice but to let the music speak for itself!!!! Who as an executive in a record company would even attempt to change the music of say - Adele ?

All boy band control or all girl band control perhaps but not control over talented and creative artists...I don't buy it !!! I'll use Pink Floyd again as an example....EMI had diddly squat influence or say on what they recorded and released !!!!
Jerome Wrote:Think it means music that was made with whatever equipment was available. i.e. no access to high-tech studios etc. etc. Some of the best albums were made this way. Jackson Browne's 'Running on Empty' springs to mind, some of which was recorded on a bus and various Holiday Inn hotel rooms around the States. Fantastic album too.
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

Beirut
Beirut is an indie-folk/lo-fi psychedelic/gypsy rock band helmed by one man: Zach Condon, who delves deep into traditional roots music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans as well as the mariachi of his native Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Iron and Wine
Lo-fi tapes of hushed acoustic indie rock go together with Miami like (tanning) oil and (salt) water, spring break and sobriety, Florida governor Jeb Bush and a problem-free day at the polls. See, what we're saying is they seem kind of incongruous. But Mr. Samuel Beam, aka Iron & Wine, was living in Miami crafting just such beguiling home recordings when Jonathan Poneman of Sub Pop "discovered" him via an indie magazine in Seattle. Boy With A Coin

The War On Drugs
The War on Drugs is an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Band member Adam Granduciel (born Adam Granofsky in Dover, Massachusetts) moved from Oakland, California to Philadelphia in 2003, where he met Kurt Vile and began playing music with him. They began playing as The War on Drugs in 2005. Coming Through

Best Coast
The best coast is the West Coast according to frontwoman Bethany Cosentino of this L.A.-based, retro-loving, sun-worshiping lo-fi pop group. That carefree California vibe is all over Crazy for You, the acclaimed debut she and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno released in 2010. Cosentino's lyrics revolve around beach-bummin', summer lovin' and getting high; her vocals recall '90s alt femme fatales like Liz Phair and Courtney Love, but with more stoney, boy-crazy wistfulness than gritty girl-power angst. Former Vivian Girl drummer Ali Koehler joined the duo full time shortly after the album's release. Crazy For You

Neutral Milk Hotel
For all their experimental detours and garnish, Neutral Milk Hotel's songs display, at their core, great songwriting in the traditional sense, like the late-career Beatles and Beach Boys. Emotionally evocative melodies and lovely vocals move through songs with memorable grace. Oh Comely
