Progress in My Lastest Musical Exploration .............ONE......... Tangerine Dream
#1
A while back I put together a thread to try and find out if members could give me any starting points for an exploration of The Band Tangerine Dream..................Much that we are a knowledgeable and experienced forum............I did not get any takers. It seems that Tangerine Dream are not a band that people had really explored..............So I got to thinking about this and did a bit of background reading and decided that here was a long term project that when I was ready I could follow at my own pace.

So I decided to look around and make a start.

I had already one album in my collection Phaedra ............

So I have now acquired Rubycon.............

I think that I have a good idea for a thread(s) here

If members wish to embark on similar journeys to advance their own areas of new taste then they could start a similar thread and document thier journeys so that others might use the information and follow ..................................Cool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

You had quite a few responses to your thread Griff...

Decent enough idea, though. The only way to keep these visible would be to stick them, and we're already over-run with stickies. Alternatively, we could maybe create another board for these. Same applies, though. The contents page would be getting fairly busy.

Thoughts, people ??

Have about 20 or so of their albums. Best by far is 'White Eagle' A very 'distinct' and driven album whereas a lot of their stuff can be wishy-washy noodlings. Still I enjoy their stuff as background music. Their 'Journey through a Burning Brain' is a good reference series that takes you through all the phases or their career. 'Song of the Whale' is their single best track. Very evocative. And 'Nebulous Dawn' is a good starting point if you want to catch their early material.

I own Zeit and Rubycon by Tangerine Dream ! I am ashamed to say that I have never followed up on this massively talented group ! Their discography is overwhelming !

I still think there's too much music for one soul to take in !...no one will ever convince me otherwise !!!!!

So Phaedra started the story ..............This being the first release in the UK but not Tangerine Dream's first album I believe if you count full album this was number four.

Being one the early pioneers of synthesiser based music of considerable length................the style in the early days was still taking shape ...........At the moment , when dealing with

the earlier albums the format tends to favour long and impressionist music which is easy to listen to ad is part of the birth of trance. The technology is still developing and it is

noticeable that the recording medium does intrude into the overall sound.....................I guess that with this kind of music it is in itself also an instrument that can be manipulated too .

Rubycon consists of two extended pieces and it could be argued that the music seems to be the kind of ting one might use for a very futuristic film or the background music some kind

of avant guard art show...................

In all I find this interesting and stimulating music which as I journey through the TD catalogue fascinates me and makes me want to explore further.........Cool

I'd suggest starting a Management Board thread about this.

I would love to explore Tangerine Dream more but I calculated that if I listened to one album a day of theirs it would take me at least four to five months barring any detours along the way !

They are very good and it wouldn't be logical to skip a lot of their works as the ones I skip might be the one or ones I like the most !

Music is subjective.
