IN the days where radio was king the aim was to catch the listener's attention within the first 5 to 10 seconds of atrack beginning
so to this end: what is the best begiining to atrack that you can think of?
My nomination would be
Owner of A Lonely Heart by Yes
What is yours and why ?
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it

ok, when reading the thread title of this one, Start Me Up by The Stones came straight to mind...
it was back in 1981, i was 13ish and the charts were full of people like Spandau Ballet,Simple Minds and all that UK synth pop etc etc...and the opening riff of this Stones classic seemed unique at the time(i had no other exposure to Jagger and co prior to then except their disco-ish "emotional rescue") so this pricked my ears up for the first time since i first heard Punk in '77.
Queen's "another one bites the dust" did the same for me around the same time....
its strange i remember those two songs in that way as i am not a big fan of either band???

Gryph. funny you mentioned that Yes song because my favorite opening to a song would have to be the slow intro that buils up to a fast one in Yes' Roundabout !!!!I like the one note at a time intro (SteveHowe) and then the explosion of a fast tempo intro to that song. It's always stuck in my mind from memory.
Another one would be Canned Heat's On the Road Again with the long droney guitar sound or some other sound machine ???? It was very different sounding for AM Radio in "68.
Ozzy's crazy laugh at the start of Crazy Train is another catchy intro...who starts a song with a crazy laugh ????..lol

The most attention-grabbing intro I've come across is the start to N.W.O. by Ministry. When I first heard it, I thought it would make a perfect soundtrack to a nightmare...

The "sirens" do it for me.
BTW, the video does this song no justice at all...

Fake from beginning to end. Love the way the 'percussion' is still going on in the background and no-one is playing anything. And how hard can it be to play only 2 notes on the bass??? Complete rubbish. Notice how relaxed everyone is???? They have time to wave and smile and God knows what else - the hats seem to mysteriously change from one head to another. That's because they aren't actually playing anything and it's all been staged. By the way, anyone spot the mistake at the Roger Water's 'The Wall' concert recently where the voice is still 'singng' but his mouth is not moving (Don't Leave Me Now). We are being duped boys and girls. And you are paying for it. Wakey wakey........
