What Are You Listening To?

JET "shaka rock" cd, 2009

the third and worst installment from these guys from Australia.
their first album "get born" is/was a rock classic IMO, their second so-so, this one simply aweful.
Jet were never an 'original' ideas band, prefering to live off the successful sound of what has come before, namely AC/DC,Easybeats,Lennon etc...but their music was still entertaining and not bad in paying homeage to the above mentioned artist who they emulated.
with this one they have still held onto the simplistic riffs of their last two efforts, however, the lyrics ars too simplistic for anyone to take this album serious at all.
vocally though, Chris Hester is still soundng good for the most part, and im sure this album, well most of its songs would stand up well in a live setting of a sweaty bar on a friday night. but as for listening to studio versions on a disc at home this leaves a lot to be desired IMO
of the six tracks that rate in the "like" for me, only a couple are truly "liked", the other three or four barely scrape in past the 1.6 mark...
"k.I.A" is the best one, closely followed by the disco-esque "beat on repeat" and the final track "she holds a grudge" which has a Stones ballad type quality to it.
"allmusic" rates this one a terrible 2/5, 1.2 on the MHRS, i guess i am a bit more generous with a 1.5???
avoid this one, and stick to their debut set only!

I DISLIKE THIS ALBUM!

NEIL YOUNG "on the beach" 1974. #16 US, #42 UK, #34 AU

listening to this on my ipod...first time since i did the Beginners guide thing...
still sounds bloody good with every passing listen and year IMO...
"walk on", the lead single off this one is another lighthearted jab at the southern states for venting their anger out on him over his "southern man" track on "after the goldrush", allbeit with a blues tune."ambulance blues" is young hitting back at the media for criticising his previous two tours. "revolution blues" is his take on the whole Manson Family from his perspective via his visits to see Manson in the late 1960s. "motion pictures" is a song for his soon to be ex-girlfriend Carrie Snogress, the other tracks are purely him performing self therapy on the previous 18 months of his turbulant life. the pick of the tracks here is the brilliant "for the turnstiles",again, all tracks here were recorded in one take in the studio.
Neil Young at his finest with this deep, dark, beautiful album!

JOURNEY "evolution" cd,1979/2011 remaster.

with all the talk on here over the last week or so re: this group i thought i best dig through my "to play" bag and pick the first cd i purchased in the US,
got this one only a couple of days in on my trip at Walmart with MH..actually picked up three or four Jouney cd's, MH offered his opinion that this is the one i should get...
when the master speaks-the pupil always listens and obeys!
hadnt really heard much Journey prior to this, maybe a couple of radio songs over the years(decades)...never enough to buy an album though.
that guy Steve Perry is the vocalist on this one, and he doesnt have too bad a voice actually, nice range IMO.
not really into this "wanksy prog rock guitar" rubbish...i like to hear the deafening roar of an "A" or "D" chord rattling through my speakers over the "busy bee" frantic guitar work anyday....
anyways,
not a bad album, some real good tunes on this one, nice harmonies, melodies and vocals also pretty good.
on one listen i cant say anything really stands out as being great but "too late" comes pretty darn close!, and at the same time nothing hits me in the face as being that bad neither.
three singles from this one in the US, "lovin, touchin, squeezin: gave the band their first US Top 20 hit...seemed all to go well for them after this album for a few years...the album was their fifth studio effort and highest chart placer at the time reaching #22 Stateside, didnt really have as much success outside the US...well, aint no way this kind of rock was ever going to replace the late 70s "ska/2-Tone" artists in the UK nor the blues/rock of AC/DC, Cold Chisel etc here in Australia.....
all up a pretty good album that seems to have stood the test of time pretty good IMO..

"allmusic" rates this one 4.5/5 which equates to 2.7 on the MHRS....not sure if that is too high or not yet as ive only heard it once, and gave it a solid 2.0 based on that listen, certainly has room to grow on me in the future...

SteveO, please let me know if you find anything worthwhile to listen to,
Tiggi has recommended several live sets as they were a good live band apparently...he believes that as i like Crazy Horse that i'd like their "live" albums

SHAKIN' STEVENS "this ole house" vinyl/cd, 1980.

for those of you who dont know "shaky"(namely our American friends)...shakin' stevens was an Elvis impersonator back in the UK in the very early 1970s, he also made numerous records then also, but none of the sold enough copies to make the charts....wasnt until 1980 when he did a cover of the old 1950s hit "this ole house" that he hit the paydirt...from that uk #1 hit he ended up with more UK Top 20 hits than any other artist during the 1980s(around 30 from memory)staying true to his 1950s sound...a few of those hits were very respectable covers of known hits and obscure covers from back in the day.
anyway this album, his first real hit album is ok, only one real good track here (the title track), "revenue man" just misses the love rating, the rest bar one are all likeable....the UK was going through a bit of a rockabilly revival back in the early 80s with Shaky and the Stray Cats

I LIKE THIS ALBUM
