WARREN ZEVON "original album series" 5cd boxset,2009.

Disc #2

WARREN ZEVON "excitable boy", 1978.

the second disc in this five cd set containing Zevon's first five charting albums..
again produced by Jackson Browne and superstar guest appearances by Mick Fleetwood and Linda Ronstadt...
this one reached #8 in the US, the single "werewolves of london" single reached #21 Stateside, top 10 here in Australia, but did not chart in the UK until the early 1980s for some strange reason...
strangely enough, i know the title track, it gets a lot of airplay here on retro stations, probably as much airplay as that Werewolves song.
that Werewolves song is not the best track on here for me, although i do love it along with three other tracks
not sure who to draw comparrisons with on this album...guess he found his own sound with this one?!
the subject matter is a bit darker than his previous album...subjects include US invasion of Veracruz, death, murder and assassination by the CIA....Nick Cave would surely be proud!
"allmusic" give this one 4/5(2.4) and i give it the same score!

THE BEATLES "the beatles" cd,1968.

disc one:

I LOVE THIS DISC

not going to get too much into the ins and outs of this album and/or its history as i'll leave out too much info and Gryphon will no doubt correct me!
anyway,,,the fab four were a fractured mess around this time, all working as individual solo artists for the most part and tollerating eachother when they really had or needed to!
that doesnt detract from the albums songs though, disc one, apart from two tracks(wild honey pie,why dont we do it in the road?) are very good to brilliant songs, infact of the seventeen tracks on offer on this disc, ten come in at a love rating here, five get 'likes' and the two above mentioned tracks are simply aweful not only by Beatle standards but by any standard!.

disc rating: 2.5

THE BEATLES "the beatles" cd,1968.

disc two:

I LIKE THIS DISC!

only thirteen tracks on the second disc....and three of those are not good at all(long long long, revolution #9,goodnight), six love tracks here also and three likes, like the first disc, too hard to pull one out as being the best track, but its got to be one of Lennon's songs...the guy was at the top of his game on these two discs, Paul was, for the most part, quite mediocre,George was both brilliant(while my guitar gently weeps) and very average,
that said though i think as a whole the whole album of thirty tracks is a testament to the best and worst of what The Beatles were...when they were at their best, they were streets ahead of everyone else in the game, when they were bad they were abysmal!

disc two rating 2.1

overall rating of both discs 2.3

2-disc live album, from 2006.

Anyone with a love of Bluesy Rock & Soul, such as Free, The Faces, or even Grease Band era Joe Cocker will find much to admire here. There's something to be said for a current (think they're still working ?!) band wanting to make this sort of music, and they've proved that there's a maket for it, so all power to their arm, as far as I'm concerned.

Two hours plus of top quality music, dazzlingly recorded at the Fillmore in SF (is that the old Fillmore West ??). I always come away from listening to The Black Crowes feeling that they play superbly together.

Bargain at £3 from Amazon.

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

^ Amorica, and Warpaint are both very good, Crazyman.

It's not a studio album, but the 2-disc Live at The Greek, recorded with Jimmy Page and featuring Led Zeppelin & Black Crowes material is a blinder.

I have a lot of Black Crowes albums sitting on my pc but I can't help thinking that anything they did after their first album 'Shake Your Money Maker' pales in comparison... just my opinion!

WARREN ZEVON "original albums series"

WARREN ZEVON "bad luck streakin dancing school" cd, 1980.

this is the third disc in this five disc set by Zevon...
like the other albums thus so far it features many guest appearances, this time by Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Linda Ronstadt, one song here (bed of coals) was co-written with T-Bone Burnett, another (jeannie needs a shooter) was co-written with Bruce Springsteen.
this was released hot on the heels of his second album which contained the hit "werewolves of london", but chart success did not equal that one, with this album reaching only #20 in the Us charts, and the single "a certain girl" only managing #57 also...guess its always going to be hard to emulate such a unique sounding track as "werewolves" without comparrisons being drawn.
nevertheless, another great album by Zevon IMO...a couple of ballads on here as well as some mighty fine rock, along with a couple of dumbass instrumentals( which incidently leave the album just short of a "love" rating for me), had the two instrumentals not been on here, then the album would rate a very high 2.6 and my favourite of his three i have listened to so far...
the subject matter here is much the same as the preceeding albums...a couple of love songs, songs of addiction, price of fame and a couple about mercenary's.
all in all another cracker of an album by Warren Zevon...im just so pee'd off that i never discovered him earlier as i truly feel that i have missed out on his career at a time when he was actually popular!

think i just figured out who Zevon reminds me of...the sartarical biting nature of Lou Reed, crossed with the melodies of Nick Lowe!?!?
