What Are You Listening To?
Tiggi Wrote:[Image: 51XpMeiNshL._SL500_AA300_.jpg]

Hard copy (Xmas prezzie from Miss Tiggi & her Hubby).

Comments from previous entry:

I was a bit concerned following MH's & Tracy's views, but this appeals greatly to me. I've always been a sucker for Kate's minimally accompanied efforts, and this seems - on first listen - as if it's the album I've been waiting on Kate to drop for ages.

Suitably barking mad, this is a collection of songs concerning snow. A bit early for that here, but not in Canada !!. Definitely wrong for the southern hemisphere. The title track, with Steven Fry is as strange an idea for a song as I've heard for ages, but it works well IMV.

The whole thing works well, in fact, and Kate's lovely voice appears still to be in fine fettle.

Great album.

All I'd add that is that this a bit of a masterpiece of understatement IMV. Plus the weather here is a bit more suited to the album now, with snow forecast for the coming weekend.

AllMusic 4/5 stars.

Hey Tiggi - are you saying we don't have any idea about snow in the Southern hemisphere? Can't tell you the number of times I have had to shovel it off the mirror with the razor blade. It's hard going let me tell you..... just kidding - I am a big fan of Miss Bush's work. Ariel was great but I have not heard this one. One to explore. And the more avant garde she becomes the more I like her. A true original.

Took a while before the penny dropped. Thought it was a bit strange using a razor blade on car mirrors !!

Tut tut. Naughty Jerome...

The weakest of my Iggy albums I think. The two covers are terrible, two of the originals are terrible, and nothing
great. All the originals were co-written with Patti Smith bass player Ivan Kral. Best is a track called Bang Bang
which was later covered by Bowie, which led to him working with Iggy. Arista was shooting for a single with that
track and brought in Monkees producer Tommy Boyce especially for it. That didn't pan out and it was Iggy's last
album for the label. Second favorite was Pumpin' For Jill which I see was used in an episode of the tv series
Chuck. The covers, Sea Of Love, a #2 hit for Phil Phillips in 1959, and Time Won't Let Me, a #5 hit for the
Outsiders in 1966. Iggy really murders that one. The album reached a lowly #166 on the Billboard chart.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Time Won't Let Me

Best Track - Bang Bang

Well this ain't the right thing to do, so let's go

Young girls they know what they're after
Young girls don't kiss me goodbye
Rockets shooting up into space
Buildings they rise to the skies

Bang bang I got mine
Bang bang reach for the sky

I keep a good friend on video tape
He'll drive his sports car until it's too late
But we'll have a hot time on the town tonight
Cause love is my bet and it's the best yet

Bang Bang I got mine
Bang Bang sun don't shine
Bang Bang you all angels
Bang Bang now you all ought to be in pictures

Oh girl
Oh girl my problems can't follow me
Phone calls I take my machine
I wander lonely to the sea
Lonely ha Ha ha what does it mean

Bang Bang I got mine
Bang Bang and you are next in line
Bang bang reach for the sky
Bang Bang sun don't shine

Rise buildings
Rise to the sky
Young girls they know what they're after
I said, young girls don't kiss me goodbye

I believe I've already discussed this one. I described as being boring and pointless. Hearing it again, I can't understand what would ever make me say such things. So beautiful, so fragile, so cathartic, so perfect

Mark Everett's second album, from 1998.

If you don't like bleak, this isn't for you. Everett pours his heart out following a sucession of personal tragedies, but despite the gloomy themes this is a strong set of songs.

There are some glimmers of hope, but they're few & far between. Musically it's pretty standard Eels fare.

Think I slightly prefer Beautiful Freak.

The second of their self-titled albums - fifteenth overall - from 2003.

Killing Joke have always come across to me as a Post-Punk band, but the riffage on this one is closer to Metal. They don't do the guitar solos that I'd expect from Metal, and the subject matter is more naturally Post-Punk.

One of their more fierce recordings judging by my limitted exposure to them, but enjoyable all the same.

Dave Grohl's on drum duties here, for some reason...

MY MORNING JACKET "evil urges" cd,2008.

Louiseville,Kentucky's MMJ's fifth studio album...and IMO their best one to date.
found these guys some time back courtesy of Tiggi, and am finally going to see them play live in April of this year at the Blues & Roots Festival alongside CSN,John Fogerty and Buddy Guy.
anyway,
probably their most easily accessable album, a bit more mainstream than their previous efforts, no Prog Rock or Crazy-Horse type sounds on this one, nothing really experimental at all, just a straight foreward "alternative rock/country" based album...yes, country sounds!....
some mighty fine acoustic type numbers with slide guitar here, but also some great heavier moments in "highly suspicious" and "remnants" to name a couple.
long standing fans who have written reviews on amazon.com dont really like this one as much as their other albums because of the 'commercial' sounding tracks, i on the other hand, see this as musical progression, which all fine musicians should be able to do if they are any good at their craft!
the track i list as my favourite one is not strictly my favourite one, but it does, however, sum up the overall sound of the album, no bad tracks on here at all, each one of these songs would have been worthy 'singles' back in the day IMO...allup, a great MMJ album and worth getting above all others they have released.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM
