GOTYE "making mirrors" cd, 2011.

about time i posted this one after championing his cause here since last september(ish)....
Wally De Backer, of Belgian descent is an Australian artist who has actually been around for almost a decade now...took till his fifth album(this one) to make any impact on the charts anywhere, including here, released three albums with his band The Basics, for whom he played drums and took on vocal duties, and now two solo albums.
like his first solo set, this one is almost what you would call a "one man band" job, from most instruments, all vocals, production, self financing etc etc...
a collection of loose pop, reggae, electronica sounds that bare a resemblance to some of Peter Gabriel's work and maybe to a lesser extent to Jon and Vangelis(not that i claim to know much about them guys).
some dark depressing lyrics here that sit well alongside(for the most part) happy go lucky tunes. that said i feel some of the album is quite sparse in placesbut without feeling due to the cold synth sounds.
as Music Head pointed out in his review on pg226 of this thread...i cant stand the useage of the Vocoder machine on one track...it sounds so outdated and after the abysmal attempt of its use by Neil Young in the early 1980s i have been put off its use for life!
all up though, a very good album, not great, but well worth purchasing the whole thing than simply just the hit "somebody that i used to know"...
the album has upto today been a number one hit in almost 20 countries as has the above mentioned single, not sure if he'll live up to expectations and have his follow up album hit the same highs on the world charts, but it will be interesting to see where he goes from here...

Very under rated performer based on the few I have. Afro-Rican artist born in Brooklyn that mixes many genres in his
work. This is his third album and maybe his best for me. Close call with the follow up, Escape Artist. Pals with Lou
Reed pre VU and frequented the same scene. Played on John Cales first solo album. A lot of racially conscious
subject matter along with the love stuff. His first single and probably best known song, Wild In The Streets
included here. One of my five love tracks. Didn't really think the album would come out that high. Spanish Town is
the favorite with a reggae/mexican feel. Nothing I don't like on this album. Had a new one just last year but not
familiar with it and the two before that were European releases only, so maybe he had a bigger following over there.
This one only reached #140 here.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - I May Not Be Your Kind

Best Track - Spanish Town

Oh signorita
When the evening sun go down
I come to serenade you
From another part of town.

Rafaella is my mother's name.
She loves her Juan Jose
My mother is a matriarch
Oh what more can I say
Together they raised three children
Mario Carmen and Ray
They live near de Janeiro
on Mona da Vinci Bay

I'm gonna eat my rice and beans
I'm gonna suck on a chili dog
Way down in Spanish Town
In the Spanish fog

Oh I love you to meet my friend Don Juan
He loves to play the mandolin
Signoritas they gather 'round'
Cause they think that he's a Mexican
But I know so much better
I'm holding here the proof
Don Juan is a gringo boy
He's not telling us the truth

But he loves his rice and beans
He's gonna suck on a chili dog
Way down in SpanishTown
In a Spanish fog

I love you to meet Margarita

Margarita she is calling me
And I love to hear my name
Out the lights and bring on the wine
It's Fiesta time again
You know I love my Portugal
'cause she shows me what to do
All the roads lead to Mexico , Mexico, Mehico, Mexico, Mehico
but they bring me back to you

She's gonna eat her rice and beans
She's gonna suck on a chili dog
Way down in Spanish Town
In the Spanish fog

Revolution is in the street
I can feel it in my blood
I can see Allende still crying out
But they nip him at the bud
Oh they're talking in the alleys
of Old San Juan, Old San Juan
All the soldiers gonna walk the trail
Big sombreros see them everywhere
Zapata lands in jail

Ain't gonna eat no rice and beans
Ain't gonna suck on nobody's chili dog
Way down in SpanishTown
In a Spanish fog
Way down in Spanish Town

Personal Best-Team Dresch

One of the greatest punk rock albums ever made, with fantastic melodies and nice shouty choruses. Probably the most underrated as well

Finally !!! Wouter "Wally" Gaultier Gotye De Backer has garnered attention ! I have been listening to this album since it was first posted by you and it is a great album ! De Backer is a musical genius of sorts with his many genres of music from pop to the avant garde to electronica to jazz and more ! I love this album so much that I now also have his albums Boardface (pretty sure it's a spinoff of Woodface - Crowded House in name) and Like Drawing Blood !...simply genius....my favorite album of 2012 thus far is Making Mirrors along with the previously acclaimed Weather Systems by Anathema !!!!

Thank you Crazy-Horse for posting Gotye's Making Mirrors and for introducing this remarkable artist to me !!!!!
